As dusk falls, the excitement builds among the boxwood hedges and avenues of linden trees. When the first notes of the overture ring out, the audience holds its breath. It begins with a bang: red comets race across the sky and golden stars burst in time with the music. The fireworks display lasts nearly half an hour—a thrilling composition of light and sound—and shines down on 10,000 smiling faces. At the “International Fireworks Competition” in Hannover, five teams from around the world present their spectacular shows in the Baroque Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen between May and September. The pre-show program features music, dance, and theater. All dates are available at www.hannover.de/feuerwerk.

For more than 300 years, the Great Garden in Herrenhausen has served as Hanover’s “green ballroom”: originally laid out as a pleasure garden by Electress Sophie, it remains a venue for summer events to this day. At the “Small Festival in the Great Garden,” more than 100 street performers take the stage under the open sky. The “KunstFestSpiele” combine classical and avant-garde art. And when theater and music take a break, the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen entice visitors with festive illuminations or the grotto designed by Niki de Saint Phalle.
