The Great Garden in Hannover-Herrenhausen is one of Europe’s most significant Baroque gardens and was recently named the best historic garden in Europe. A riot of colorful blooms forms ornamental patterns, water features ripple between meticulously trimmed hedges, and snow-white statues glisten through the greenery. Just as it did more than 300 years ago, when Hanover’s princes created the ornate park at their summer residence, the garden still serves today as an open-air stage for concerts, theater, and lavish celebrations. A classic event is the International Fireworks Competition, for which the world’s best pyrotechnicians create explosive displays. With music, ground-level, and aerial fireworks, they directly reference the Baroque setting.

The world's best pyrotechnicians

“There is a great deal of interest in our competition from international teams—we are proud to be known among pyrotechnicians around the world,” emphasizes Hans Christian Nolte, managing director of Hannover Veranstaltungs GmbH (HVG), the company organizing the competition.

Family celebrations against the backdrop of a stunning castle

Before the pyrotechnicians get started, a supporting program tailored to the featured country will enchant the Festsaal im Grünen. Visitors will experience a fantastic spectacle featuring live music, street performers, cabaret, and theater—and be taken on an atmospheric journey through a wide variety of countries.
The impressive Baroque setting in Herrenhausen has only recently been fully restored: Herrenhausen Palace was rebuilt in 2013. The Neoclassical façade now shines in its former glory and houses a modern museum dedicated to the history of the Guelph rulers who created this green ballroom.

Late-summer festivals

In addition to the fireworks competition, Hannover-Herrenhausen offers many other events, such as:
