Sail on the idyllic Lake Steinhuder Meer by day or ride on horseback through picturesque heathland; in the evening, enjoy the pleasures of city life with opera, concerts, and variety shows: the Hannover vacation region offers particularly charming contrasts. Active vacationers will find plenty of opportunities for sports and outdoor recreation around the state capital. In summer, Lake Steinhuder Meer, with its maritime charm, invites visitors to go pedal boating or rowing, or to swim and sunbathe on the beach. A boat tour allows you to explore the historic fortress island of Wilhelmstein. Cyclists can also ride all the way around the lake on their own or rented bikes. And in the evening, the state capital of Hannover beckons with its wide range of cultural offerings, just a stone’s throw away from the cozy restaurants and pubs in the rural surroundings.

Hiking, climbing, or biking

The Deister, located about 30 kilometers southwest of Hannover and reaching an elevation of up to 405 meters, is a great place for hiking. It is Germany’s northernmost low mountain range. Here, the whole family can try their hand at climbing, for example at the high ropes course. Those who prefer to explore Hannover’s local mountains from the saddle of a bicycle will find the “Deisterkreisel” route network just right. The sections of the roughly 100-kilometer loop can be combined individually and offer plenty of sights: Impressive manor houses, village churches, and half-timbered houses bear witness to centuries past. Many scenic golf courses around Hannover invite you to work on your game. Thanks to short distances and an excellent public transportation network, visitors from the surrounding area can quickly reach the state capital of Hannover, where museums and theaters, restaurants and bars, as well as numerous shopping opportunities, offer plenty of variety.
