Just 30 kilometers southwest of Hanover lies the Deister mountain range: a green paradise for hikers and walkers, as well as for cyclists and horseback riders. The range rises to a height of 405 meters. At the top, you’ll find observation towers—from which you can look far across the countryside above the treetops—cozy restaurants for day-trippers, and beautiful picnic areas. Along the way, you’ll find imposing manor houses, quaint village churches and half-timbered houses, magnificent parks, museums, water and windmills, and historic monasteries. Both recreational athletes and families can easily find routes that suit them here. What makes the Hanover vacation region special is that the state capital is just a half-hour S-Bahn ride away. After a day in the countryside, a diverse evening entertainment program awaits—ranging from variety shows and opera to concerts and movies. All information about the region’s many recreational activities can be found online at www.visit-hannover.com/urlaubsregion.

High ropes course, water park, and visitor mine

The tranquil Deister town of Wennigsen, for example, is a great starting point for excursions on foot or by bike. With the “Grüner Faden” and the “Grüne Kette,” there are marked trails leading to charming destinations to choose from. The Wennigsen Water Park, one of Germany’s largest natural swimming lakes, offers a truly special nature experience. Featuring a spring-fed pond, diving rocks, and a waterfall, it is set in a picturesque setting. Barsinghausen, meanwhile, is home to the Deister Open-Air Stage, one of Lower Saxony’s most beautiful forest theaters. At the Klosterstollen visitor mine, you can experience the over 100-year-old tradition of coal mining in an impressive way. Near the town of Springe, a high-rope course awaits the adventurous, and in the local bison enclosure, you can also spot wild boars, roe deer, red deer, and even wolves and bears. In winter, alpine skiing is also possible in Springe.

Around Lake Steinhude

Another outstanding recreational area near Hanover is the Steinhuder Meer: Here, you can hike on flat terrain, enjoy fascinating views across the water, and explore particularly scenic nature reserves that are home to rare birds. The 29-square-kilometer inland lake invites visitors to cycle along its loop trail, and water sports enthusiasts will also find exciting opportunities here. For example, you can sail, paddle, ride a pedal boat, surf, kitesurf, or swim in the former fishing village of Steinhude or in the quieter village of Mardorf.
