Press Release

A Stroll Through Hannover in a Bulli!

To celebrate the anniversary, one-of-a-kind Bulli vehicles will be on display at various locations on April 3 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sixty years ago, the Transporter plant in the Stöcken district opened its doors. Since 1956, the Bulli has been rolling out from Hanover into the world. To mark this anniversary, the capital of Lower Saxony is inviting everyone to a big Bulli stroll in Hanover: On April 3, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., many one-of-a-kind Buli will be on display from City Hall to the Old Town.

Approximately 170 vehicles will be on display at various locations along well-known streets and squares in Hannover’s Old Town. Each of the exhibition booths is dedicated to one of the following themes: camping and recreational vehicles, trades, passenger transport, emergency vehicles, and the oldest Bulli vans. Designated parking spaces for Bulli fan clubs round out the variety of exhibition booths.

Volkswagen Bus fans, enthusiasts, and collectors are invited to take a trip down memory lane and explore the history of these iconic vehicles.

One of the vehicle highlights of the day is a T1 Samba Bulli featuring a unique mosaic wrap in a hippie design. The vehicle owner’s 19-year-old daughter designed the wrap herself and applied it to the car with the help of an artist friend. One of the oldest Bulli vans traveling to Hanover that day is the original red-and-brown Samba Bulli with 23 windows, built in 1956. This vehicle was among the first to roll off the assembly line at the Hanover-Stöcken plant. The T1 owned by Jonny Peper’s company demonstrates how small businesses have been using the Bulli for generations. The company owns at least one service van from every T-series and is showcasing its oldest—and thus its very first—service van to Bulli enthusiasts at the Bulli Stroll.

In addition to the promotional booths and fan club parking areas, a colorful program of events will take place on the Radio21 stage at Human Rights Square 1. There, “Beyond Music” will rock the stage live during the Bulli Stroll. Rock or pop? Simply the best of both: that’s the motto of this rock-pop cover band from Hanover.

Throughout the day, the Bulli Contest will also take place on Human Rights Square: The jury, consisting of Jan Sedelies (Head of Editorial Marketing at HAZ), Prof. Dr. Thomas Schwark (Director of the Art History Museums in Hanover), Hans Christian Nolte (Managing Director of Hannover Veranstaltungs GmbH), Michael Steinke (Member of “Bullis Bringen Freude”), Gerolf Thienel (Automotive Historian for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles), and Cornelia Neves (Historical Communications, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles), will select the winners in the following categories: oldest Bulli, Bulli that traveled the farthest, Bulli with the best customization, most beautiful Bulli, and the most authentic Bulli. The winners can look forward to a nostalgic Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles day at the classic car exhibition in Limmer. Of course, the original VW currywurst will be a must-have. Around 45 Bulli owners have registered for the contest.
