"Hanover: Very British—In the Footsteps of the Personal Union"

Learn all about Hanover’s close ties to the British royal family on the “Hanover: Very British” city tour!

Very British - on the trail of the personal union

From 1714 to 1837, the Electors of Hanover also reigned as Kings of Great Britain and Ireland. Hanover and the British royal family have thus been closely linked for centuries. With the resumption of the city tour “Hanover: Very British – In the Footsteps of the Personal Union,” Hannover Marketing & Tourismus GmbH (HMTG) is once again highlighting this special historical relationship.

Hanover’s historic downtown has fascinating stories to tell.
A cup of Welfentee at the “Teestübchen” on Ballhofplatz kicks off this journey through the past. The classic Earl Grey, enhanced with cornflower and bergamot, sets the mood for the tour with its fresh, fruity notes. Ballhofplatz itself has always been a gathering place—during the Personal Union, the nobility entertained themselves there with “Jeu de Paume,” a historic ball game and precursor to modern tennis.
From there, the route continues to the Marstalltor, which still bears the coat of arms of George I—the first ruler of the Personal Union. Georgstraße is also a relic of this era, financially supported by George III, who lived in London and never actually visited Hanover himself. A glance at the Ernst August Monument in front of the train station shows that the first King of Hanover to reign after the end of the Personal Union (1837 to 1851) remains a central landmark in the city to this day.
A visit to the Leineschloss, the New City Hall, and a stroll down Grupenstraße, along with other stops, bring history to life. To wrap things up, head to the Old Town pub “Dublin Inn,” where a freshly poured Guinness—long a classic in British pubs—brings the tour to a fitting close.
