Starting Friday (March 13), the world’s only curved elevator in the New City Hall will begin its summer season. Starting at 10 a.m., this unique elevator ride will once again take visitors up to the observation deck high above Hannover.
At a 17-degree angle, they can ride up to the 97.73-meter-high dome of the New City Hall, watching the journey unfold right before their eyes through a window in the cabin roof. Another window in the floor of the cabin can be made transparent at the push of a button. Once at the top, visitors are rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view of the state capital. On a clear day, you can see the Deister and even the peaks of the Harz Mountains. The opening of the curved dome lift once again makes the New City Hall a major tourist attraction in Hannover every spring.

Background Information on the Curved Dome Lift
In 2025, approximately 80,000 visitors used the curved dome lift.
On average, 75,000 to 80,000 visitors have ridden the curved dome lift in recent years.
Depending on the weather, the season runs from mid- to late March through the end of October.
The ride takes about 1 minute; the elevator travels at 2 km/h.
The curved dome lift was constructed in 1908 during the building of City Hall and went into operation at the city hall’s inauguration in 1913. The current elevator, featuring a glass floor and glass ceiling, has been in operation since 2008.
The curved dome lift is one of the most unusual elevators in Europe—it doesn’t just go up, but follows the curve of the historic town hall dome.
On the way up, it first travels vertically and then ascends at a 17-degree angle.
The entrance at the bottom and the exit at the top are offset by more than eight meters because the curved dome lift follows the curve of the dome. In the mornings, the curved dome lift is particularly popular as an excursion destination for daycare groups and school classes.
The City Hall dome is 97.73 meters high. It is one of Hannover’s most striking landmarks and has shaped the city’s skyline for more than 100 years. The wraparound observation deck offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the city—on a clear day, all the way to the Deister in the south.
The New City Hall was opened in 1913 in the Wilhelmine Historicist style. The monumental dome is architecturally modeled after the large Renaissance and Baroque domes of Europe’s grand public buildings.
