New Leibniz Tour - Visit Hannover

Hannover is thinking ahead

New Leibniz Tour

A new Leibniz tour brings the polymath to life in the city.

Stop on the Leibniz Tour

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz arrived in Hannover 350 years ago. The polymath lived and worked in the city for nearly four decades—and continues to shape its cultural and scientific heritage to this day. Whether in the form of a monument, as the namesake of major institutions, or at historic sites where he worked, visitors to Hannover encounter Leibniz at every turn.

To mark the anniversary year “Hannover Thinks Ahead: 350 Years of Leibniz,” Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH (HMTG) is now bringing the legacy of the philosopher, mathematician, and visionary to life in an even more vivid way. At the heart of these activities is a newly designed Leibniz Tour, which takes visitors and locals alike on a journey through the city center in the footsteps of the polymath.

The tour connects historical sites with fascinating stories from Leibniz’s life and work, demonstrating how closely his ideas remain linked to Hanover to this day. Stops along the way include the Leibniz Monument, the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library, and the Neustadt Court and church Stadtkirche. There, visitors can expect extraordinary insights: The library, located between Schützenplatz and the Waterloo Column, houses the famous Leibniz calculating machine, while the Neustadt Court and church Stadtkirche displays a cast of Leibniz’s skull, made during a reburial approximately 100 years ago. Such unique artifacts bring the personality of this polymath to life in a vivid way.

“Leibniz embodies curiosity, innovation, and international thinking like few others. With this anniversary tour, the HMTG aims to highlight his significance for Hannover while also offering new perspectives on the city as a hub for science, culture, and innovation,” said Lisa Brünjes, Head of Tourism at the HMTG.

The new tour is just one part of an extensive anniversary program. Plans include digital offerings and social media campaigns centered on Leibniz, the consolidation of numerous events on a central platform at visit-hannover.com, and a heightened presence of the anniversary year throughout the city. In collaboration with partner institutions, exhibitions, lectures, and special cultural events are also being organized to shed light on Leibniz from various perspectives.

With its anniversary year, “Hannover Thinks Ahead: 350 Years of Leibniz,” the state capital bridges the past and the present and invites visitors to rediscover one of Europe’s most significant thinkers. Of particular importance is the connection between historical heritage and contemporary relevance: Leibniz is presented not merely as a historical figure, but as a visionary whose ideas continue to inspire science, society, and innovation to this day
