Invitation to a photo op: Season kickoff at Lake Steinhuder Meer –
featuring the transport of a barrel of Hannover Gin to Wilhelmstein Island
Dear members of the media,
The Lake Steinhuder Meer Holiday Region is kicking off the 2025 season with a special campaign. Together with Hannover Gin, it is setting a standard for sustainability, local sourcing, and enjoyment. On Thursday, April 3, we, together with Lake Steinhuder Meer Tourismus GmbH, cordially invite you to a special press and photo event.
What connects Lake Steinhuder Meer with Hannover Gin? The gale bush (Myrica gale)—an almost forgotten treasure that now grows in only a few regions of Germany, including Lake Steinhuder Meer. This so-called “climate plant” adapts particularly well to changing climatic conditions such as heat, drought, or flooding, and is also used in Hannover Gin. For more than a decade, the company Hannover Gin has therefore been cultivating this endangered plant in its rooftop garden. Now, efforts are also underway to establish it on Wilhelmstein Island. As part of this project, 250 liters of Hannover Gin from the “Lake Steinhuder Meer/Wilhelmstein Island” special edition will be transported to the island to mature in a hand-selected port wine oak barrel and hung in the crown of a plane tree.
