The days are getting shorter, the lights are shining brighter—the holiday season is just around the corner.
Starting November 24, three Christmas markets—all within easy walking distance of the main train station—will transform downtown Hanover into a magical winter wonderland. The offerings are complemented by numerous festive gathering spots in various neighborhoods—from the Christmas Village on Lindener Berg to the Winter Magic at Döhrener Turm and the Winter Village at Lister Tower, all the way to the Winter Forest at Reimanns Eck, as well as many other cozy mulled wine spots throughout the city’s neighborhoods and the entire region.
Christmas Market in the Historic Old Town
Around the Marktkirche and all the way to the World Exhibition Square, some 125 festively decorated stalls will offer handicrafts and culinary delights under the theme “hannoverzaubert”—gift ideas, Christmas decorations, and much more. A 19-meter-tall Christmas tree illuminated by some 3,000 light bulbs stands out as a striking feature next to the church.
At Ballhofplatz, the “Finnish Christmas Village” welcomes guests with specialties like open-fire-grilled salmon and two tents where visitors can sit, while the historic market on the banks of the Leine transports visitors back to medieval Hanover with jugglers and market stalls. In the "Wishing Well Forest," forest huts and the scent of pine invite you to linger and enjoy the atmosphere. In the afternoon, children can listen to stories told by a storyteller for free or bake cookies in the Christmas bakery (3 EUR, no registration required).
Christmas Market at Ernst-August-Platz
In front of the main train station, the Roncalli Christmas Village on Ernst-August-Platz will be open until December 30, offering a festive atmosphere. The historic Ferris wheel dominates the scene and welcomes travelers as a landmark visible from afar, heralding the pre-Christmas season. Traditional handicrafts and a selection of culinary delights round out the ambiance. Every day at 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 8 p.m., the light show on the venerable station façade bathes the square in festive splendor.
Lister Meile Christmas Market
In the festively decorated Lister Meile pedestrian zone, lovingly decorated stalls line the street, creating a charming atmosphere. The selection ranges from wooden toys and handmade items to wool socks and Christmas decorations. Culinary delights are also part of the program. For children, rides and a puppet show provide additional entertainment.
Christmas pyramid
The 18-meter-tall, walk-through Christmas pyramid is a traditional fixture at Kröpcke. With its classic wooden construction, intricately designed figures, and warm lighting, it sets the pre-Christmas mood in the heart of downtown.
Christmas Garden at the Adventure Zoo
The fifth season of the Christmas Garden Hannover at the Erlebnis-Zoo kicked off with a “Lights On” moment featuring Scorpions legend Klaus Meine. Through January 4, 30 light installations along the two-kilometer loop trail will transform the zoo’s surroundings into a magical winter wonderland. Small booths offer snacks and hot drinks for cozy breaks.
Christmas Markets in the Region
The Advent season is also celebrated in many different ways throughout the greater Hannover area: from Burgdorf to Rethmar, town centers and historic squares are transformed into small, festively lit gathering places. Landestrost Castle offers a special highlight: On St. Nicholas Day (December 6), starting at 5 p.m., music, light art, and culinary delights come together there to create an atmospheric experience.
