From art, culture, and variety shows to ice skating and New Year’s Eve celebrations: Hanover offers plenty of festive winter fun
Get ready for the festive season! In this year’s winter campaign, Hannover Marketing & Tourismus GmbH (HMTG) showcases the festive winter fun in the city and region of Hannover. The focus is on the highlights of art, culture, and variety shows in Hannover—featuring imagery from the GOP Winter Variety Show “Wilderness,” the children’s Christmas musical “The Jungle Book,” and the “Feuerwerk der Turnkunst” gymnastics show. The Christmas Garden at the Hannover Adventure Zoo and various art exhibitions are also featured in the winter campaign. And as they do every year, the city and municipalities in the Hannover region invite visitors to a variety of colorful Christmas markets.
Christmas market in the old town
Starting in mid-November, the campaign will be launched with 870 City-Light posters and approximately 300 large-format billboards between Magdeburg and the Ruhr region, as well as between Hamburg and Kassel, and on select locations in downtown Hannover, at train stations in northern Germany, and on an ICE train—accompanied by ads in daily newspapers, lifestyle magazines, and social media campaigns.
The "Tips & Events" supplement, which is distributed in a print run of 1.5 million copies in daily newspapers throughout Lower Saxony and selected neighboring areas, also offers many more opportunities to explore Hannover and the Region Hannover during the winter and holiday season.
"The city and Region Hannover aim to create a festive atmosphere through a variety of markets, events, and activities. The winter campaign is designed to inspire visitors from outside the area to come to Hannover and to draw residents' attention to the diverse events our city has to offer," says Hans Nolte, Managing Director of Hannover Marketing & Tourismus GmbH.
Curtains up, lights on, circus ring and ice rink ready—whether loud, quiet, acrobatic, or sparkling—the city becomes a stage!
Hannover is the capital of variety shows. The GOP is bringing the traditional winter variety show to the stage. From November 17 to January 14, "Wilderness" will offer a wild, romantic, funny, and masterful experience in the venerable setting of the Orangery. The show promises "an acrobatic journey into nature as a counterbalance to modern life." At the same time, the 10th GOP children’s musical, “The Jungle Book,” will run at the Georgspalast from November 5 to January 7. The adventures of the human child Mowgli and the man-eating tiger Shere Khan delight audiences of all ages.
Guests can look forward to dynamic aerial acts and high-energy performances at the Feuerwerk der Turnkunst. The thrilling show "Heartbeat," taking place on New Year's Eve (December 31) and January 27 at the ZAG Arena, promises to bring joy to your heart.
The Hannover New Year's Eve Party will also kick off at the HCC on December 31.
This year, the Hannover Christmas Circus is presenting its 5th Grand Prix of the Artists, featuring a star-studded lineup of award-winning circus performers. From December 21 to January 7, world-class artists will take the stage in the festively decorated tent at Schützenplatz.
From November 17 through January 15, once darkness falls, Hannover Adventure Zoo once again invites visitors to pause, marvel, and enjoy the pre-Christmas cheer. During this time, guests can embark on a magical journey through fantasy worlds in the Christmas Garden. In this glittering work of art, more than 30 colorful illuminations line the circular path.
The scent of gingerbread and hot punch wafts through Lister Meile, the city center, and the Old Town from November 27 to December 22—Hanover’s Christmas markets are a treat for the senses year after year. The surrounding communities in the region also offer a diverse array of colorful festive stalls. For the first time this year, the creative team from Roncalli Traumfabrik is staging a Christmas village on Ernst-August-Platz in front of the main train station. It features many small, decorated huts modeled after Lower Saxon half-timbered architecture. In addition to a historic Ferris wheel and a nostalgic café, the highlight is a specially designed projection on the station’s facade that tells a Christmas story three times a day.
Behind the main train station, ice princesses and princes can glide across the ice and spin pirouettes: The winter program at Raschplatz kicks off on November 24. Then, Northern Germany’s largest synthetic and energy-neutral artificial ice rink, spanning 440 square meters, invites visitors to enjoy ice skating and curling.
There’s no shortage of art and culture to enjoy, alongside variety show entertainment and a leisurely stroll through the market stalls. Hanover shines culturally with renowned names: The creators of “Monet’s Garden” promise an “immersive exhibition experience” when a new perspective on Monet’s works is presented at the Schützenplatz from November 23 to February 11.
Faithful reproductions of works by the graffiti artist Banksy will be on display at "aufhof" through February 25. Starting February 17, the Sprengel Museum Hannover will feature works by Picasso and Beckmann. Beginning November 16, the Herrenhausen Baroque series will enchant audiences with Baroque music at the Herrenhausen Gallery.
"With our winter campaign, we’re highlighting plenty of reasons to extend your stay in Hannover. With the city’s three Christmas markets and those in the surrounding region, the Christmas Garden, the Winter Open Air at Raschplatz, the exciting stage program, and the art exhibitions, there’s something for everyone. Visitors can enjoy many unforgettable moments themselves or give the gift of magical memories," said Hans Nolte.
