Around the World (May 13, 2014)

Hanover is looking forward to summer: The new Hanover supplement “Tips and Events – Summer 2014” from Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH (HMTG) provides a comprehensive overview of the event highlights for the coming months.

The highlight of the summer lineup of events is the popular Maschsee Festival, which—fittingly—graces the cover of this brochure. Spanning a total of 12 pages, the brochure also once again offers great suggestions for leisure activities to suit every taste.

Around the World in One Go—under this theme, the 29th edition of the Maschsee Festival brings an international flair. From sushi by the lake, “Welcome to Miami,” and Caribbean treats to Mexican, Spanish, Greek, and Italian specialties—at Lower Saxony’s largest open-air festival, you can enjoy dishes from around the world for 19 days. And that vacation feeling comes free of charge! Concert highlights, water sports, open-air dance evenings, and an exciting children’s program guarantee a nonstop vacation vibe for young and old alike. Numerous stars and (hidden) gems from a wide variety of countries will perform on the large stages surrounding the lake. The most beautiful views: From the Maschsee Skyliner—at 81 meters, the world’s tallest mobile observation deck—you’ll have a fantastic view of the festival and all of Hanover.

There’s also plenty to celebrate and dance to at the world’s largest shooting festival, featuring its traditional shooters’ parade (July 4–13), or at the summer concerts on the Expo Plaza, including the NDR2 Plaza Festival, the N-Joy Starshow, Kings of Leon, and Xavier Naidoo. The lake stage on the Steinhuder Meer also offers a varied program, kicking off the season on June 14 with a poetry slam. On June 1, Hanover invites everyone to Car-Free Sunday. On this day, the streets belong solely to pedestrians, cyclists, and skaters! A new highlight this year is the KinderKlingelKarawane, which winds its way from the SolarEnergieArena to Friederikenplatz.

Culture lovers will find plenty to enjoy at events such as the KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen (June 6–July 1 and Sept. 19–28), the 16th Night of Museums (June 14), the TANZtheater INTERNATIONAL (Sept. 4–13), or the 28th International Choreography Competition (June 21–22).

Tinkerers of all ages can mark their calendars for the Maker Faire (July 5–6) and visit the Congress Centrum to marvel at—or actively participate in—the joy of crafting, inventing, and experimenting. A detective’s intuition and musical knowledge will also come in handy on Germany’s first GeoTour, the “Musical Ge(o)mysteries of the Hanover Region.” Over a distance of 113 kilometers, participants must use a GPS device to find and open 17 geocaches.

For anyone who’d like to combine the summer events with a short getaway in the Hanover region, the HMTG has put together special experience packages that include hotel accommodations and other extras. For romantics, the Opera House is presenting the Disney musical “Beauty and the Beast,” and nature lovers can explore the city surrounded by greenery on six varied bike routes. Families can spend an exciting weekend during summer vacation at the Erlebnis-Zoo and the GOP Varieté Theater. At www.hannover.de/erlebnispakete, you can book the perfect all-inclusive package for a wide variety of occasions.

The summer edition of the Hanover supplement “Tipps und Termine” will be published on Friday, May 16, in many daily newspapers within a radius of approximately 250 km around Hanover, with a circulation of 1.8 million copies. In addition, the supplement will be distributed directly to households in the Harz region. It will also be available at the Tourist Information office on Ernst-August-Platz, as well as in many restaurants and public facilities, such as libraries, civic offices, and recreation centers.
