Discover Hanover on German Unity Day (September 26, 2014)

All of Germany is looking to Hanover: German Unity Day will be celebrated in the capital of Lower Saxony on October 2 and 3. This marks the 25th anniversary of the event—a very special occasion that will be celebrated with a diverse program, numerous prominent (political) figures, official ceremonies, and a lively public festival featuring a colorful lineup of entertainment, sports, informational activities, and children’s programs. The event is organized by the Lower Saxony State Chancellery.

The New City Hall—one of Hanover's most popular attractions.

About 500,000 guests are expected. Among those in attendance will be German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Federal President Joachim Gauck, Bundestag President Norbert Lammert, and the host, Lower Saxony’s Minister President and current President of the Bundesrat, Stephan Weil.

“It is an honor for us to celebrate this very special anniversary in Hannover. For visitors from all over Germany, the national holiday is a wonderful opportunity to discover and experience the city in all its diversity,” says Hans Christian Nolte, managing director of Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH (HMTG).

Discover Hanover

Visitors can get a great overview of the diversity of Germany’s greenest major city on a ride aboard the Hanover double-decker convertible bus. The 100-minute tour provides plenty of interesting and informative facts about the city’s neighborhoods, history, and residents in eleven languages, including Low German, Chinese, and Spanish. Thanks to the hop-on, hop-off system, passengers can get on and off at all seven stops. You can explore Lower Saxony’s capital on your own by taking a walk along the Roter Faden, a route that stretches about four kilometers and passes by the city’s most important sights.

Special city tours—for example, through Hanover’s Old Town with its North German brick Gothic architecture, romantic alleyways, and small boutiques, or through the beautiful Herrenhausen Gardens—round out your trip to Hanover. The Community Festival

The festival will take place on October 2 and 3 around the New City Hall and Lake Maschsee. At the heart of the event are the presentations by the 16 federal states and the constitutional bodies around Lake Maschsee. The Lower Saxony Mile, featuring 70 exhibitors from the host state, is also worth a visit. In addition, a colorful program of entertainment, sports, information, and children’s activities will be offered—almost like a second Maschsee Festival. Performing on stage: Jupiter Jones, Elaiza, Laith Al Deen, and Marquess. On the lake, the “Wake Masters” will put on an action-packed show on October 3—and in the evening, guests can look forward to an explosive surprise over the lake.
