A royal guest in the capital of Lower Saxony: Prince Andrew will visit Hanover on June 4! The occasion is the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the personal union between Great Britain and Hanover. Against this backdrop, British Ambassador Simon McDonald moved his traditional garden party in honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday from Berlin to Hanover this year. His Royal Highness Prince Andrew, Duke of York and the Queen’s second-eldest son, will attend this event on June 4, 2014, at Herrenhausen Palace.
In Hanover, the “British Year” will also be celebrated with numerous other events: Starting on May 17, the Lower Saxony State Exhibition will open its doors under the theme “Hanover’s Rulers on the English Throne, 1714–1837.” At the same time, Marienburg Castle will host the exhibition “The Path to the Crown—The Kingdom of Hanover and Its Rulers,” which also commemorates the 300th anniversary of the personal union. Together with numerous other events—ranging from an opera performance to a Hanover-British race day and an English garden festival—the Hanover region is set to go “very British.”
With a royal program, numerous large-scale, regularly held events also pay tribute to the era when the royals hailed from Hanover: For example, at the International Fireworks Competition on May 31, the English team “1st Galaxy” will enchant the magnificent Baroque setting of the Herrenhausen Gardens with British fireworks artistry; a supporting program featuring cabaret and music will also provide British entertainment for the whole family. The Fête de la Musique on June 21 in downtown Hanover will have a “very British” feel—as will the KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen, a festival unique in Europe that bridges the gap between the Baroque and the modern with a cross-genre program.
