Hannover – A premier hub for the healthcare industry and science

Science Hub | Healthcare Industry in Hanover

Hannover is investing in its position as a healthcare hub and strengthening its international competitiveness. This is evidenced by facilities such as the Center for Biomolecular Actives, the Clinical Research Center, and the Siloah-Oststadt-Heidehaus Hospital. In total, more than 3,000 companies with 65,000 employees are active in the healthcare sector in the Region Hannover.

The healthcare industry in the Region Hannover is one of the dominant sectors, growing year after year. No other economic region in Germany is as strongly focused on healthcare as Hannover. One in seven workers there is employed in medical, nursing, or other healthcare professions—a total of more than 65,000 employees. There are more than 3,000 companies operating in the healthcare industry. After all, healthcare has a bright future: people are living longer. They are paying closer attention to their well-being and preventive care. In addition, more and more people are becoming dependent on care; they require support that family members are often unable to provide.

World-class research centers

The Hannover region is home to world-class research centers active in a variety of fields—including Hannover Medical School, which specializes in (pre-)clinical research, infectious disease biology, and transplant medicine, as well as the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover Foundation. The International Neuroscience Institute (INI) is a clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with nervous system disorders and a center for brain research, and has already expanded into China and Iran. It is considered one of the best-equipped specialized clinics in the world. The Region Hannover is also internationally recognized in the fields of regenerative medicine, biomedical engineering, and healthcare. Universities and research institutions work closely together in these areas. This makes the region an attractive business and science hub for many companies operating in the healthcare industry.

The Klinikum Region Hannover comprises eleven hospitals, making it one of the largest municipal hospital operators in Germany. All of these hospitals work closely with local physicians to provide patients with care close to home. At Medical Park Hannover, young companies in the life sciences sector find ideal conditions for their future—including access to research networks, laboratory and office space, funding agencies, opportunities for scientific collaboration, and training and continuing education programs.

And Hannover continues to invest in its status as a healthcare hub. This is evidenced, among other things, by three new buildings in the medical sector. The Clinical Research Center (CRC) Hannover offers 6,000 square meters of space for clinical trials, patient-oriented research, epidemiological studies, and the MHH’s central biobank. At the Center for Biomolecular Active Substances (BMWZ), various research groups from the life sciences, chemistry, and medicine collaborate. They further develop active and natural substances to make them more suitable for medical use. The Executive Board of Leibniz University Hannover established this pioneering research center, which opened in September 2014 after more than two years of construction. As one of Lower Saxony’s most modern hospitals, the Siloah-Oststadt-Heidehaus Clinic opened in September 2014 after four years of construction and serves as an academic teaching hospital for the Hannover Medical School.

Excellent higher education landscape

The close collaboration between Hannover’s universities—which have a combined enrollment of 40,000 students—and the various research institutions also helps to ensure that the region remains a sustainable and attractive hub for business and science.

Hanover’s higher education landscape offers a nearly comprehensive range of degree programs and is renowned for its academic excellence. This is reflected in its four universities, one university of applied sciences, and several prestigious private academies. Thanks to the practical and forward-looking focus of their studies, many Hanover graduates also launch their professional careers here. With approximately 26,000 students and around 100 degree programs across nine faculties, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University Hannover is Lower Saxony’s second-largest university. At Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, approximately 10,000 students across five faculties benefit from international degree programs, practical relevance, and close ties to the business community.

At Lower Saxony’s only conservatory, the University of Music, Drama and Media Hannover (HMTMH), students can choose from 33 degree programs. The Hannover Medical School (MHH) enjoys an international reputation for its pioneering work in transplant medicine. With approximately 3,000 students, it is the largest medical training institution in Germany. The University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (TiHo) is also a global leader; it has over 2,400 enrolled students and a history dating back to 1778. This makes it the oldest independent veterinary medical school in Germany.

Inspiring the next generation with ideas

Since 2007, it has been held every two years at the exhibition grounds in Hanover: IdeenExpo, a hands-on, interactive event—the only one of its kind in Germany—focused on career guidance, sparks an interest in science and research. The next IdeenExpo will take place from June 10 to 18, 2017.

For tinkerers: The Maker Faire Hannover at the Hannover Congress Centrum (HCC) has become a well-established event, focusing on a playful and creative approach to technology and science.
