With their third “Ge(o)heimnisse” tour, the state capital of Hanover and Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH (HMTG) invite you on an exciting journey around the world through the Hanover region. During this digital scavenger hunt, participants can track down twelve caches with international themes. Further details about the tour are available at www.hannover.de/geoheimnisse and on www.geocaching.com, the international website for geocachers from around the world.

From the Netherlands through Switzerland to Japan and China: With the new GeoTour, you can comfortably travel around the world in just a few hours—without even needing a passport. That’s because the third edition of “Ge(o)heimnisse” takes participants back to the Hanover region once again. International flair is provided by hiding spots in locations that connect the city and region to the world: For example, Hannover International Airport, the world’s largest trade fair grounds, and the Herrenhausen Gardens, which serve as the backdrop for the International Fireworks Competition year after year. The popular Maschpark behind the New City Hall is also part of the new tour—as Hannover’s “Park of Sister Cities,” it, too, hides global “Ge(o)mysteries.”

The stops that turn this geocaching tour into a trip around the world lead from Springe through Hanover to Garbsen and Langenhagen. Each location, with its hidden cache, has a connection to one of twelve selected countries. For example, the bison enclosure in Springe, with its moose, offers a connection to Sweden; the Herrenhausen Gardens—designed after the French model and featuring the grotto created by Niki de Saint Phalle—transport visitors to France; and in the tea house in the city park, Japan and its sister city, Hiroshima, are within reach. In addition, geocachers can look forward to exciting caches related to the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Turkey, China, Italy, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, and Hannover Airport—a symbol of the “Gateway to the World.”

Mayor Stefan Schostok emphasizes the importance of Hanover’s relationships around the world: “I am very pleased that the Sister Cities Park is part of the HMTG’s new GeoTour. By naming this central park, located directly behind the New City Hall, we are also demonstrating our connection to and appreciation for our sister cities. The digital scavenger hunt is a great way to raise awareness among young people about the state capital’s international relationships and the cultural exchange that comes with them.”

“As an international trade fair city, it made sense to make the region’s global connections visible and tangible. This tour is an exciting way for young tourists in particular to discover Hanover and its history. Geocachers from all over the world are warmly welcome,” says Hans Christian Nolte, managing director of HMTG.

“The two GeoTours that HMTG has been offering in the Hanover region in cooperation with us since last year—‘Sattelfeste Ge(o)heimnisse’ and ‘Musikalische Ge(o)heimnisse’—are among the three highest-rated GeoTours worldwide. This has now also caught the attention of geocachers from all over Germany and even from abroad,” says Daniel Pflieger, managing director of GeheimPunkt GmbH, the service provider that designed the tour.

Numerous enthusiastic and detailed log entries showed just how much fun geocachers have on the GeoTours in the Hanover region: “They leave with positive experiences and new knowledge,” says Pflieger happily.

Equipped with a Global Positioning System receiver or a smartphone, treasure hunters around the world are now setting out in search of the more than 2.6 million “caches” that are currently active worldwide. The items they find are usually small or larger containers containing a logbook and various items to trade.

Geocaching is a global game in which participants hide small or large treasures, record their geographic coordinates, and publish them online. This allows other participants to set out in search of the caches using a GPS device or smartphone. A cache, or geocache, usually consists of a container with a logbook in which successful finders can sign their names. Often, small items for trading are included, which can be taken if you leave something of equal value in their place. To get the information needed to participate, geocachers can register on the website www.geocaching.com.
