A cultural event for every taste: With the Festival of Cultures, the opening of the Sprengel Museum’s new wing, and the Ihme Vision “Open Light Festival,” Hanover is offering a particularly diverse cultural program this weekend! The Festival of Cultures around the New City Hall will be colorful, cheerful, and musical on Saturday and Sunday (September 19 & 20), starting at 12 p.m. each day: Here, the focus is on peaceful, intercultural exchange! The Festival of Cultures is a vibrant meeting place for different nations and cultures. On the large main stage, local and international artists present an engaging show program featuring world music to listen to, clap along to, sing along to, and dance to. The musical spectrum ranges from bossa nova, funk, and reggae to swing and salsa.
All around the international marketplace, culinary delights, handicrafts, and clothing from various countries will be on offer. In Maschpark, the “Dance Stage” will feature various dance groups from around the world, creating a lively atmosphere. On the children’s lawn, the festival’s young guests can learn acrobatic tricks, laugh at an African clown show, sing, make music, and much more. In keeping with World Children’s Day on Sunday, the program is rounded out by a colorful children’s parade.
The New Sprengel Museum
The opening of the Sprengel Museum Hannover’s new wing is a major highlight for Hannover as a cultural hub. Designed by the Swiss architectural firm Meili/Peter, the new, elegant structure—made of anthracite-colored concrete—covers a total of 5,300 square meters, including 1,400 square meters of exhibition space. With the exhibition “Ten Rooms, Three Loggias, and a Hall,” running from September 19, 2015, to January 10, 2016, the new spaces take center stage while also highlighting artistic elements.
For the first time, visitors can take a peek behind the new façade on Saturday—and at the same time admire the new entrance hall featuring the sculpture “Another Twister.” On the first day open to the public, the museum will be open from 10 a.m. to midnight and, in addition to musical interludes, a café, and the Sprengel Friends lounge, will offer guided tours of the new building’s architecture—including a look behind the scenes—as well as tours of the three exhibitions “Ten Rooms, Three Loggias, and a Hall,” “PLAKATIV,” and “Our Collectors, Our Donors” every hour and half-hour. Under the motto “More Museum for Everyone,” admission is free, but donations are welcome.
IHME VISION
During the “OPEN LIGHT FESTIVAL” on September 18 and 19, the Ihme-Zentrum will serve as a backdrop, screen, and stage for contemporary moving-image art and light installations. The newly built Ihme Park will serve as the foyer and festival grandstand. IHME VISION presents visual art forms including short films, documentaries, video art, projection mapping, light installations, and illumination.
The festival is a modern, dynamic platform for Hannover’s film and creative scene. The film selections are curated by Bughardt Inhülsen (up-and-coming), Motte Jansen (UND BITTE), and Uwe Plasger (Hannover Filmklappe). For the first time, the three film festival organizers are coming together as a team in this format to compile a selection of cross-genre short films from their respective festival lineups, featuring works by Hannover-based filmmakers, for IHME VISION.
