United day and night
Hannover invites you to take a trip back in time!
Hannover in Fast Motion: Starting October 21, Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH (HMTG) will launch its nationwide promotional campaign featuring extraordinary footage from the Region Hannover.
A glimpse into the past: On one side, a crystal-clear blue-green water surface, the evening lights of Mardorf on the horizon, and a starry sky above Lake Steinhuder Meer; on the other, a bright sun, active visitors in electric boats, or settlers.
Time Jump: Hanover – Linden
HMTG’s new nationwide image campaign showcases various highlights of the Region Hannover through the changing hours of the day. Unique, well-known, and beautiful places, depicted as the day turns to night: the Hannover Adventure Zoo, welcoming its countless visitors by day and glowing in a warm, inviting light by evening. The view from the university’s Conti Tower over the lively city at night and the relaxing view of the trees along the banks of the Leine River during the day. The New City Hall with a view from the dome toward Lake Masch—green and serene by day, colorfully illuminated and bustling in the evening during the annual Lake Masch Festival. In short: the fascination of time-lapse footage captured in a single image! Between 800 and 3,800 shots were taken per motif, totaling approximately 20,000 photos for the campaign.
“These are a thousand different views of Hannover! With these photos, we’re extending the summer and already whetting people’s appetite for a visit next year, which promises to be full of events. However, the aim is not only to attract tourists but also to encourage Hanoverians to see familiar places in a new light,” explains Hans Christian Nolte, Managing Director of Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH.

The elaborate campaign was produced in collaboration with Hanover-based photographer Stefan Knaak, who specializes in time-lapse photography. HMTG and Knaak have been working closely together since 2014. The film “Hannover – timelapse 2.0” was first posted on Facebook on December 27, 2014, and made available online on the HMTG YouTube channel and the Hannover.de tourism portal. The response: around 390,000 views, 5,400 shares, and widespread distribution. Since then, the film has been traveling the world to showcase Hannover in a contemporary way: It is currently playing at the cinema on Hannoversche Straße in Changde. Prior to that, it was featured at the Hannover Lounge and international travel fairs in the U.S., Russia, China, Belgium, and Turkey. It also opened CeBIT 2015, with China as the partner country.
“After working on the time-lapse film, I used this fascinating aspect of photography to present Hannover’s atmospheric scenes in a new light. Finding the right locations—and, above all, the right perspective for those locations—was an exciting challenge,” said Knaak.

The advertising campaign has officially kicked off: Around 700 large-scale billboards across Germany are drawing attention to Hannover’s tourist highlights. The campaign is being rolled out in East Frisia, Hamburg, Bremen, and northern parts of North Rhine-Westphalia, among other locations. Additionally, around 100 Megalights in Hannover and other cities, such as Hildesheim, Kassel, and Braunschweig, showcase Hannover through the ages. In addition, a motif from the current campaign graces the cover of the upcoming “Tips and Dates” newspaper supplement, which will be published in mid-November and highlights the key events of the next three months. Throughout Germany, the campaign motifs will be featured on the covers of Deutsche Bahn’s ICE travel timetables.
Behind the Scenes:
By scanning the QR codes on the advertising posters with a smartphone, for example, you can access moving images! These show how day turns into night. The short time-lapse videos showcase the numerous individual shots from the photo shoots. A total of 12 different, expressive motifs were created—and there’s a fascinating video for each one. These are also available on the campaign website at www.hannover.de/zeitsprung. In addition, there are some interesting insights into the creation and shooting of the individual motifs.

A visit to Hannover is always worthwhile: HMTG has put together attractive group packages and accommodation deals for this purpose. An overview is available at www.hannover.de/erlebnispakete. Especially for young people: The “Hannover Living: Weekend Trip” accommodation package offers an affordable stay in the state capital of Hannover.
