Obama, Cameron, Renzi, Hollande, and Merkel—thank you for visiting Hanover!

On Sunday, April 24, 2016, U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in Hanover, then met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at Herrenhausen Palace and opened the Hannover Messe that evening at the Hannover Congress Centrum. Following a tour of the Hannover Messe on Monday morning (April 25, 2016), French President François Hollande, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi were welcomed at Herrenhausen Palace for a joint meeting.

During his stay, the U.S. president was able to see many of Hanover’s landmarks and thus gain a firsthand impression of this attractive state capital. These included the Herrenhausen Gardens, which served as the venue for the meetings of the heads of state. This garden complex comprises the Baroque Grand Garden, the Conference Center and Museum at Herrenhausen Palace, the Botanical Berggarten, and the Georgengarten.

The Great Garden is one of the best-preserved and most significant Baroque gardens in Europe. In 2015, the Herrenhausen Gardens were awarded the European Garden Prize. Events such as the International Fireworks Competition and the “Kleines Fest im Großen Garten” are just a few of the annual highlights. President Obama also passed by the New City Hall with its observation dome, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University, the green Eilenriede City Forest, and Lake Masch—where the famous Maschsee Festival takes place every summer, attracting numerous visitors to Hanover—in his limousine “The Beast”; amid typical North German April weather—sun, rain, and hail showers—Hanover is simply worth a visit, no matter the season.
