Obama, Cameron, Renzi, Hollande, and Merkel—thank you for visiting Hannover!
David Cameron, Barack Obama, Angela Merkel, François Hollande and Matteo Renzi
Five heads of state visited Hannover: In addition to U.S. President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel also welcomed British Prime Minister David Cameron, French President François Hollande, and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi to the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen in Hannover.
On Sunday, April 24, 2016, U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in Hannover, held talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at Herrenhausen Palace, and opened the Hannover Messe trade fair that evening at the Hannover Congress Centrum. Following a tour of the Hannover Messe on Monday morning (April 25, 2016), French President François Hollande, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi were welcomed at Herrenhausen Palace for a joint meeting.
The Great Garden in Herrenhausen
During his stay, the U.S. president had the opportunity to see many of Hannover’s landmarks, allowing him to experience firsthand the charm of the state capital. These included the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen, which served as the venue for the meeting of heads of state. This garden complex comprises the Baroque Grand Garden, the conference center and Museum Schloss Herrenhausen, the Botanical Berggarten, and the Georgengarten.
The Great Garden is one of the best-preserved and most significant Baroque gardens in Europe. In 2015, the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen were awarded the European Garden Prize. Events such as the International Fireworks Competition and the “Kleines Fest im Großen Garten” are just a few of the annual highlights. President Obama also passed by the New Town Hall with its observation dome, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University, the green Eilenriede City Forest, and Lake Masch, where the famous Maschsee Festival takes place every summer and attracts numerous visitors to Hanover; amid typical North German April weather with sun, rain, and hail showers—Hannover is simply worth a visit, no matter the season.
