Start of the season at Steinhuder Meer: New advertising campaign invites you to visit!

Water sports enthusiasts, cyclists, hikers, golfers, and strollers: Whether you’re looking for peace and quiet or an active vacation, the Steinhuder Meer offers many unforgettable experiences in the spring, summer, and fall.

Steinhuder Meer - experience more

Just in time for Easter, a new promotional brochure is being released that showcases both the towns in the Steinhuder Meer region and the sporting and cultural activities available on the water and around the lake. With plenty of information and tips—but above all, stunning photos—just flipping through the brochure is enough to get you in the vacation spirit. A fold-out map of attractions and an insert featuring event highlights—such as Fishermen’s Day at the end of May, the Festive Weekend in mid-August, and the Fish Festival in September—round out the offerings.

Hauke Jagau, President of the Hannover Region, is looking forward to the start of the season: “Many people come to Steinhuder Meer to experience nature. But of course, water sports also play a major role. At Steinhuder Meer—thanks in part to the outstanding work of the nature park team—we have succeeded in harmonizing nature and recreation in an exemplary way.”

Willi Rehbock, managing director of Steinhuder Meer Tourismus GmbH, adds: “Around and on Lake Steinhude, visitors can enjoy culture, nature, and activities such as sailing and biking in a unique atmosphere.”

Under the slogan “Heading for Spring,” numerous large-format posters in Hanover, Bückeburg, Alfeld, Stadthagen, and Hildesheim, as well as ads in various monthly and city magazines, are sparking interest in a little journey of discovery to the Steinhuder Meer.

“Camping and RV sites right on the water, a constant stream of new recreational activities—such as stand-up paddleboarding—and the region’s proximity to Hanover are making the Steinhuder Meer region increasingly popular, even among young tourists,” says Hans Christian Nolte, managing director of Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH.

Experience the sea actively

The Steinhuder Meer is one of Germany’s most historic sailing areas. Around 3,000 sailboats are moored at the docks on the north and south shores, and approximately 50 regattas are held on the Steinhuder Meer each year. From the kiteboarding and surfing beach on the north shore in Mardorf, athletes take to the waters on surfboards or with stunt kites. A local surf school offers beginner courses and rents out the necessary equipment to athletes.

Sailing on the Steinhuder Meer

One of the hallmarks of the Steinhuder Meer are the so-called “Auswanderer”: Visitors can take these open-deck sailboats to Wilhelmstein Island, the north shore, or other destinations. Anyone who wants to be their “own captain” can rent electric, pedal, or rowboats from a variety of rental companies and explore the Steinhuder Meer on their own.

The water, which is often warm due to its shallow depth, is particularly appealing to swimmers: The “Weiße Düne” and the swimming island, with their beautiful sandy beaches, shallow shorelines, and playground equipment for children, ensure a fun swimming experience. A mini-golf course, a climbing park, horse-drawn carriage rides, and Segway tours offer vacationers a varied program of activities.

Experience nature by the sea

Natural spectacles in every season: Surrounding the 32-square-kilometer body of water are marshes, forests, heathlands, and glacial shifting dunes. Observation towers, themed bike trails, and rotating exhibitions at the Steinhuder Meer Ecological Conservation Station (ÖSSM) offer many opportunities to explore this attractive landscape in a variety of ways.

Wilhelmstein island fortress

Experience sea culture

The historic spa facilities in Bad Rehburg, the monastery complex in Loccum, Landestrost Castle in Neustadt am Rübenberge, and the monastery in Mariensee are extraordinary places that are easily accessible from the Steinhuder Meer. Many of these historic buildings will serve as venues for concerts, readings, and exhibitions in the coming months. In addition to the Wilhelmstein island fortress, with its historic weapons and other historical artifacts, the butterfly farm, the Fishermen’s and Weavers’ Museum, and the Toy Museum are also worth a visit.

With the Volkswagen Seebühne, the towns of Neustadt am Rübenberge and Wunstorf have created a venue that is unparalleled in northern Germany. The stage, completely surrounded by water, is a successful blend of nature and culture. During the summer months, the floating stage can be found at three different locations.
