Hanover Vacation Region: The Perfect Day, the Perfect Weekend!

The Davis Cup, the Market Criers’ Guild, Sunday shopping, “Backstage” at the GOP Varieté Theater, and the season opener at Marienburg Castle—there are plenty of reasons to visit the Hannover vacation region on the first weekend in March.

On Saturday, cheer on Michael Kohlmann’s team at the Davis Cup in the TUI Arena; in the evening, catch the backstage show at the GOP Varieté Theater; then walk back to the hotel so you can relax and stroll through downtown with your family the next day during Sunday shopping hours. On the weekend of March 5–6, there will once again be plenty of opportunities to spend a perfect day or weekend with family or friends in the Hannover vacation region.

Davis Cup: Tennis in Hanover

The German Davis Cup team will play its first-round match in the Davis Cup World Group against the Czech Republic from March 4 to 6, 2016, at the TUI Arena in Hanover. Germany and the Czech Republic have faced each other 14 times in the Davis Cup’s more than 100-year history. The German men’s national tennis team has won ten of those matches. The two nations last met in 2005 during the Davis Cup relegation round in Liberec, with Germany winning the tie 3–2.

Guild of the Market Criers at the Stone Gate

In keeping with an old tradition, market criers will compete from March 2 to 6 at Steintorplatz to tout their wares. The audience can watch as Noodle-Micha, Eel-Axel, Sausage-Achim—the reigning German champion—and their colleagues vie for shoppers’ attention. The audience will choose the best among the “barkers.” It’s not about volume, but rather originality, quick wit, humor, and the interaction among them.

Sunday Shopping in Hanover

Hanover’s downtown stores will open their doors on March 6 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely shopping spree or just need to run a quick errand—thanks to the wide variety of options and short distances, Hanover offers a great shopping experience. Around the Kröpcke Clock, numerous stores invite you to enjoy an extensive shopping tour. The Ernst-August-Galerie is a state-of-the-art shopping mall featuring 150 stores, dining options, and plenty of lifestyle offerings. The Niki-de-Saint-Phalle Promenade, Kröpcke-Passage, and Galerie Luise offer variety for every occasion.

GOP Varieté Theater: “Backstage” Show

Who calls the shots when it comes to the music? What goes on in the rehearsal room? And why is the same food served so often in the cafeteria? These are the kinds of questions explored in “Backstage.” The new show at Hanover’s GOP Varieté will be lifting the curtain behind the curtain through March 6, offering the audience a glimpse behind the scenes—in true variety show style, of course: artistically. Ludger K. has been hired as the host. The “mischievous professional teenager” from Westphalia strolls across the stage and philosophizes—bitingly and nonchalantly—about the small and large absurdities of world events.

Season Opener at Marienburg Castle

The former summer residence of the House of Welf remains in the family’s possession to this day—the House of Welf being the oldest princely dynasty in Europe—and enchants visitors with its fairy-tale appearance and its almost completely preserved interior. At the start of the season on March 6, visitors can explore the castle’s rooms and exhibition spaces at their leisure. Castle guides explain the exhibits and are available to answer any questions. Fairy-tale characters stroll through the palace, creating a magical atmosphere.
