3,891,211 overnight stays in the Hanover region

Even after a record year in 2015, Hanover is once again seeing an increase in overnight stays. With 2,240,346 guest overnight stays between January and December, the capital of Lower Saxony was able to surpass last year’s record figures by another 0.4 percent. For the entire Hanover region, the Lower Saxony State Statistical Office recorded 3,891,211 overnight stays, representing an increase of 0.7 percent.

Also noteworthy is the long-term increase in the number of overnight stays: In 1999, Hanover recorded approximately 1.1 million overnight stays, and by last year, that number had more than doubled! This fact suggests that, in addition to trade show visitors, the number of leisure tourists, as well as the number of corporate events, conferences, and conventions in the Hanover region, must have increased significantly.

International guests

Foreign guests accounted for 495,887 overnight stays in the state capital. Most foreign visitors from Europe came from the United Kingdom (42,671 overnight stays), followed by the Netherlands (32,526 overnight stays) and Poland with 27,307 overnight stays.  Strong growth was also recorded from the 2016 trade fair partner countries: Switzerland, as the CeBIT partner country, saw an increase of 9.6 percent, while the number of visitors from the U.S. (partner to the Hannover Messe, with a visit by then-President Obama) rose by 14.8 percent compared to the previous year.
