3,891,211 overnight stays in the Region Hannover

Hannover has once again recorded an increase in overnight stays following the record year of 2015. With 2,240,346 guest overnight stays between January and December, the capital of Lower Saxony managed to surpass last year’s record figures by another 0.4 percent. For the entire Region Hannover, the Lower Saxony State Office for Statistics recorded 3,891,211 overnight stays, representing an increase of 0.7 percent.

The long-term increase in the number of overnight stays is also remarkable: In 1999, Hannover recorded approximately 1.1 million overnight stays, and by last year, that figure had more than doubled! This suggests that, in addition to trade fair visitors, the number of leisure tourists, as well as the number of corporate events, conferences, and conventions in the Region Hannover, must have increased significantly.

International guests

Foreign guests accounted for 495,887 overnight stays in the state capital. The largest number of foreign visitors from Europe came from the United Kingdom (42,671 overnight stays), followed by the Netherlands (32,526 overnight stays) and Poland with 27,307 overnight stays.  Significant growth was also recorded from the 2016 trade fair partner countries: Switzerland, as the CeBIT partner country, saw an increase of 9.6 percent, while the number of visitors from the U.S. (partner to the Hannover Messe, with a visit by then-President Obama) rose by 14.8 percent compared to the previous year.
