New souvenir: 0-euro bill
Hanover's "New Town Hall" now has its own banknote
One of the state capital's most famous sights adorns the first official 0-euro bill from Lower Saxony.
Starting Monday, you can buy it: Hanover’s first 0-euro bill. This high-quality souvenir bill feels authentic and meets (almost) all the security features of a regular euro bill—though it has purely symbolic value. The front, which is the same size as a 20-euro bill, features the New City Hall. The back is adorned with well-known tourist attractions, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum, and the Brandenburg Gate.
Hanover’s 0-euro note was produced in a run of 5,000 and will be available starting October 30 for €3.50 at the Tourist Information office at Ernst-August-Platz 8 and, of course, at the information counter of the New City Hall, which inspired the design. For tourists and visitors, it’s a lovely memento and a great souvenir—more than just a postcard. The idea came from the agency Hinrichsen Kommunikation, which wanted to have an extraordinary promotional item produced for its hometown. In collaboration with Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH (HMTG), this led to the creation of Lower Saxony’s first souvenir banknote. Collectors have been waiting a long time for a Lower Saxony 0-euro note—now it’s here, and it’s already in high demand even before its official release.
“Our international guests can now take a little piece of Hannover home with them in their wallets! It’s a wonderful idea to send the Hannover banknote on a journey around the world,” says Hans Christian Nolte, CEO of HMTG, with delight.
What is a 0-euro note? It is produced on genuine banknote paper with typical security features at one of the largest banknote printing facilities in France. The base color is purple, similar to that of the 500-euro note, and the souvenir note is the same size as the 20-euro note. The following security features are used: a personalized watermark, a copper strip, a hologram, a banknote security background, fluorescent invisible ink, and a unique serial number. As a Euro souvenir note with a face value of 0 euros, it is officially approved and authorized for the German market. The front side features a custom design, while the back side depicts famous European landmarks. In 2015, the authentic Euro souvenir note was invented by Frenchman Richard Faille, who had previously designed mainly commemorative coins.
