A banner measuring more than 100 square meters is now on display at Hannover Airport to promote city tourism in Lower Saxony—and the sector is performing well in the first half of 2019.

Hannover Airport is making it happen: As a new partner in the “9 Cities +2 in Lower Saxony” marketing initiative, Hannover Airport is bolstering the international promotion of Lower Saxony. Starting immediately, landmarks such as the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen and Burgplatz in Braunschweig are featured on a 16-meter-wide giant banner located directly at the airport’s S-Bahn station. The banner’s message is clear: The cities are quick and easy to reach from the airport, Lower Saxony’s hub, and offer attractive highlights for international guests. Sönke Jacobsen, press spokesperson for Hannover Airport, comments: “As a tourism airport, it is important to us to communicate the appeal of Lower Saxony’s cities and make them visible. With over 6.3 million passengers a year, the airport is naturally an ideal advertising hotspot.”

The impact of the collaboration between the cities of Braunschweig, Celle, Göttingen, Goslar, Hameln, Hannover, Hildesheim, Lüneburg, and Wolfenbüttel with their partners Autostadt in Wolfsburg and Hannover Airport is also evident in the half-year figures recently published by the Lower Saxony State Office for Statistics. In total, the cities recorded nearly 2.7 million overnight stays by mid-year, 490,245 of which were from abroad. For international visitors, this represents a 6.7 percent increase compared to the previous year. Hans Christian Nolte, Managing Director of Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH and spokesperson for the marketing partnership, is pleased with the growth: “Especially as a partnership focused solely on international marketing, promoting Lower Saxony as a destination can only be done in collaboration with the airport. The current figures prove us right and demonstrate the success of the city partnership.”

The international marketing partnership “9 Cities in Lower Saxony” was founded more than 30 years ago. The membership of the partnership has remained unchanged since then. In 2011, the Autostadt in Wolfsburg joined the partnership, and Hannover Airport joined in 2019.
