City Tourism in Lower Saxony - Visit Hannover

“Support your neighbor”

City Tourism in Lower Saxony

Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH is promoting a program of reciprocal visits to neighboring cities through the city network under the slogan “Visiting Friends.”

Over 100 large-format posters in cities across Lower Saxony are whetting people’s appetite for summer city experiences right on their doorstep.

For years, the cities of Braunschweig, Celle, Göttingen, Goslar, Hameln, Hannover, Hildesheim, Lüneburg, and Wolfenbüttel have been promoting themselves abroad as “9 Cities + 2 in Lower Saxony” in collaboration with the Autostadt in Wolfsburg and Hannover Airport. The city partnership is primarily active in Germany’s immediate European neighbors. However, extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures: Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, starting August 7, the city network will also be promoting itself right on its own doorstep, in the heart of Lower Saxony.

The red thread

This joint initiative reflects the long-standing bond between the members of the partnership. “Especially given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting drastic drop in revenue for tourism service providers, solidarity among friends is important,” says Hans Nolte, Managing Director of Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH and spokesperson for the city partnership, explaining the campaign. “For many who are currently spending their vacations at home, a trip to one of the neighboring cities offers an exciting change of pace. There are many well-known sights, but also plenty of surprises to discover,” says Nolte.

Celle Castle

A canoe trip past the Nanas and the Old Town in Hannover, following in the footsteps of the Hanseatic League in Lüneburg, exploring the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Goslar and Hildesheim, or discovering the Royal Palace in Celle, and a boat tour on the Weser River in Hamelin—numerous attractive sights invite you to visit the nine cities of Lower Saxony and the Autostadt in Wolfsburg. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, many major events in the cities have been canceled. Programs had to be modified or adapted to social distancing and hygiene regulations. However, this has also given rise to exciting new opportunities and offerings. Whether on foot or by bike, the historic squares, medieval churches, castles, parks, and gardens in the cities are easily accessible via short city tours. Charming smaller summer events such as “Summer in the Park” at the Autostadt, the light trail in Braunschweig, or events as part of the Cultural Summer in Wolfenbüttel and Göttingen round out a visit.
