The Region Hannover stands out as an innovative industrial hub, a service-oriented metropolis, and a commercial hub for national and international markets.

As a trade fair city, it drives economic growth. At the same time, it is one of Germany’s most important insurance hubs. In terms of purchasing power, sales, and centrality, Hanover ranks among the most successful retail markets in Germany. World-renowned brands such as Continental and Sennheiser exemplify Hanover’s innovative strength.

Whether it’s industry, services, skilled trades, or retail, Hannover is considered Lower Saxony’s most important economic hub and offers a diverse range of industries. In the industrial sector, automotive and mechanical engineering have traditionally been strong sectors. In the service sector, the transportation, logistics, communications, tourism, and conference and event industries are reporting tremendous growth. A hallmark of the region is the close link between business and academia, which fosters innovation and new business start-ups. In addition, the city’s central location, excellent transportation infrastructure, high-quality recreational opportunities, and economic development initiatives have a positive impact on the economy and quality of life.

Internationally renowned brands are a hallmark of the Hanover economic region: companies such as Conti, Sennheiser, Bahlsen, Johnson Controls, KIND Hearing Aids, Komatsu-Hanomag, Rossmann, Sennheiser, Solvay Germany, TUI, and Deutsche Messe have their headquarters here. With approximately 15,000 employees, Volkswagen AG (Commercial Vehicles) is the city’s largest employer. In total, around 30,000 people work in the automotive industry in Hannover, including suppliers.

Major insurance companies such as Concordia, VGH, and VHV, as well as the Talanx Group—which has established headquarters in Hanover for its brands Hannover Re and HDI-Gerling—also have a strong presence. Furthermore, financial service providers (Swiss Life, Nord/LB) with headquarters or branches help shape the city. In the media industry, the publishing companies Madsack and Schlütersche Verlagsgesellschaft, as well as the TV producer TVN, are just as well-known as the NDR regional broadcasting center on Lake Maschsee.
