Hannover: A City of Sports
Whether you’re an active participant or a fan, part of a team or a lone wolf, the sports city of Hannover guarantees plenty of thrills. For instance, when Hannover 96 plays in the second Bundesliga or Hannover’s successful handball team, the Recken, slams the ball into the goal. Whether it’s soccer, golf, ice hockey, triathlon, or horse racing—Hannover offers almost every kind of sporting experience.

Hannover is represented by several clubs in the most popular sports. The handball players of TSV Hannover-Burgdorf deliver pure excitement and energy at the Swiss Life Hall. And top-level competitions can also be experienced in water polo, rugby, and field hockey. From April to October, the Neue Bult Langenhagen becomes the venue for thoroughbreds—at one of Germany’s most modern horse racing tracks. Hannover offers excellent conditions for major sporting events. The German Classics, a top-tier equestrian event, and the nationally significant Hannover Marathon prove this every year.

Hannover’s recreational athletes can certainly claim to be in the top league. Around 290,000 people in the city and Region Hannover are registered with over 1,000 sports clubs. According to a study by the University of Osnabrück, Hannover is even Germany’s sports capital, as 80 percent of its residents engage in physical activity for at least an hour once a week. From aikido to water skiing, anyone looking to get active can find the right sport. Whether at a club or a gym, around Lake Maschsee or in the Eilenriede City Forest.
Among the most popular recreational sports events are the triathlon competitions at Maschsee and in the Wasserstadt Limmer, as well as the “skate by night” series for inline skaters. And at Blauer See in Garbsen, wakeboarding and wakeskating enthusiasts show off their spectacular jumps and tricks.
Golfers in the Region Hannover will find a wide variety of clubs that invite them to putt and pitch in picturesque settings for affordable green fees. Whether for recreational fun or as a team-building exercise, the Springe high ropes course offers a course made of tree trunks and steel cables at heights of up to 20 meters. The SeaTree climbing and adventure park in Mardorf on Lake Steinhude also invites visitors to try their hand at thrilling balancing acts, featuring 27 climbing stations across three difficulty levels.
Steelman
“Wet, cold, and muddy”—that’s the motto of this obstacle course race, which covers approximately 2 x 9 kilometers crisscrossing the grounds and surrounding areas of the Neue Bult horse racing track. Following the marathon and triathlon, the “Steelman” is now the latest “ultimate” athletic challenge. Everything that’s grueling and exhausting stands in the way of participants at this very special sporting event, draining every ounce of energy from their bodies. Spectacular and thrilling obstacles await the runners. Whether it’s climbing, balancing, or scrambling over stacks of tires—there will be plenty of surprises.
