Sustainable Hanover

Note: MOIA ceased operations in Hannover as of July 18, 2025

Hannover offers an eco-friendly and sustainable lifestyle in a major city.

Moia aims to bridge the gap between local public transportation and taxis.

In March 2016, the state capital of Hannover became one of the first German municipalities to sign the German Association of Cities’ model resolution “2030 Agenda – Shaping Sustainability at the Local Level.” As a pioneer in sustainable urban development, the city of Hannover has been actively engaged in this field for over 25 years and is pursuing this path together with many people. For this work, it received the German Sustainability Award in the category “Germany’s Most Sustainable Major City”.
Hannover offers an environmentally conscious and sustainable lifestyle in a major city. In addition to eco-friendly and regional restaurants, weekly markets, and sustainable shopping options, the state capital features a well-developed rail network and electric mobility.
One example is the “Fashion born in Hannover” initiative, a coalition of various regional labels from Hannover that produce and sell sustainable products.

Climate-friendly mobility

Climate-friendly mobility is becoming increasingly important, and eco-friendly alternatives are being used more and more in road traffic. There are now numerous electric charging stations in the city and region of Hanover; enercity alone provides over 150 charging points.
Various car-sharing and ride-sharing providers make it possible to always have a car available without owning one: share a car, use it when needed, and never search for parking again. With over 350 vehicles, Stadtmobil is the largest car-sharing provider in Hannover, and electric vehicles are also part of its fleet. Since
2021, the ride-sharing services of VW subsidiary Moia have used only electric vehicles. Rides can be conveniently booked via an app. Velix’s bicycle taxis are a climate-friendly alternative to a regular taxi ride.

Green Hannover

The Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen, the Eilenriede City Forest, and the New Gardens in Hannover are perfect for a trip into nature. Many city parks offer a chance to relax in green surroundings. Things get even more colorful at Maschsee or the Hannover Adventure Zoo.
Hannover is known for its vast urban forest. Located in the eastern part of the city, the Eilenriede stretches across 640 hectares of woodland, making it one of the largest and oldest contiguous urban forests in Europe.
