Hannover – a green city

With its urban forests, parks, and recreational areas, Hannover is one of Germany’s greenest major cities. Lake Maschsee and Lake Steinhuder Meer lend the city a maritime flair—swimming, sailing, and surfing included. Climate protection programs and mobility concepts enable energy-efficient and resource-conserving construction and living.

Hanover offers both a big-city vibe and nature—right in the heart of the city and all around it. In a central location, the Eilenriede stretches across approximately 640 hectares as the city’s “green lung,” making it more than twice the size of Hyde Park in London, for example. Beyond the city forest, there are many other opportunities for walking or observing nature. The “green ensemble” comprising Georgengarten, Welfengarten, Herrenhäuser Allee, Berggarten, and the world-famous Großer Garten is truly impressive. Visitors to the Hannover Congress Centrum appreciate the city park, the site of Germany’s first Federal Horticultural Show. There are approximately 8,000 more street trees in the city area than there were 20 years ago. Additional green space is provided by around 20,000 allotment gardens, the southern Leine floodplain, and smaller urban forests.

Maritime charm and water sports—Hanover excels in these areas as well. Centrally located, Maschsee is considered a paradise for rowers, sailors, walkers, cyclists, and joggers. Lake Steinhuder Meer, at 32 square kilometers the largest inland lake in northwestern Germany, is also a popular local recreation destination: whether it’s a family outing with a boat ride, boating, swimming, cycling, or exploring nature in the dunes or moors—almost everyone can enjoy their favorite activity here. The Deister, with its extensive network of trails for hikers and cyclists as well as its attractions (e.g., the Klosterstollen Barsinghausen visitor mine, the Nordmann Tower, and the Anna Tower), is also a sought-after local recreation and vacation area.

This climate protection program, the only one of its kind in Germany, is ambitious. The Hannover 2020 Climate Alliance aims to reduce CO2 emissions caused by electricity and heat consumption by 40% by 2020 compared to 1990 levels. The best example is the innovative zero:e park in Wettbergen, Europe’s largest zero-emission housing development. In the approximately 300 homes currently being built using passive construction methods, residents consume about 80% less energy than is typically required for new buildings. In addition, other initiatives such as the enercity proKlima grant fund, the HannoverMobilCard with a standard public transit pass, and car-sharing programs are paving the way for an environmentally friendly future.
