Hanover's museum diversity

Unique artifacts, valuable collections, spectacular exhibitions—Hanover is regarded throughout Germany as a major art and museum hub.

Whether it’s the Sprengel Museum Hannover, the Historical Museum, the Lower Saxony State Museum, or the new Museum at Herrenhausen Palace, the collections and exhibitions offer new insights into a wide variety of fields, ranging from the visual arts, regional and local history, archaeology, natural history, and ethnology to the history of technology and everyday life.

Art is everywhere in Hannover, from the Sculpture Mile to the “Nanas” and the “BUSSTOPs.” The Sprengel Museum Hannover showcases 20th- and 21st-century art, and its retrospective exhibitions attract a great deal of interest. Other nationally renowned museums of contemporary art include the kestnergesellschaft and the Kunstverein Hannover. The Lower Saxony State Museum is also popular; with its archaeology, state art gallery, natural history/vivarium, ethnology, and numismatic collection, it covers an impressive range of subjects. The August Kestner Museum delights its visitors with art exhibits spanning from antiquity to the present, as well as everyday objects and design.

The “Wilhelm Busch – German Museum of Cartooning and Illustration” showcases satirical art, while the Historical Museum appeals particularly to those interested in state and city history. The new Herrenhausen Palace Museum—an institution of the state capital of Hanover, funded by the state of Lower Saxony—is dedicated to the history of the Herrenhausen Gardens and their historical figures.

The World of Kitchen (WoK), Europe’s first kitchen museum, showcases exhibits related to food preparation and nutrition. The Theater Museum takes visitors on a journey through time, exploring Hanover’s 350-year history of theater and opera. And the Museum of Energy History(ies) displays curiosities and classics that are sure to spark your interest. At the Hannover-Laatzen Aviation Museum, visitors can experience the history of aviation up close through more than 4,500 exhibits. The “Long Night of Museums” night event allows visitors to explore the diversity of Hannover’s museums in a single evening.

Sprengel Museum Hannover Expansion Project

With the expansion of the Sprengel Museum Hannover, one of the largest cultural projects in Hannover in recent years is taking shape. The new, elegant structure, made of anthracite-colored concrete, spans a total of 5,300 m², including 1,400 m² of exhibition space. The floor plan features ten spacious rooms of varying sizes with natural skylight, complemented by three tranquil oases—known as “loggias”—offering views of the Maschsee. In addition, there is a large hall that offers a truly unique spatial experience thanks to a spectacular flight of stairs. In the new building, functional spaces—such as workshops, storage areas, and specially climate-controlled storage facilities for photographic works—complement the museum’s capabilities at the highest level. Even more works of art can now be made accessible to the public—an attractive asset for Hannover as a cultural hub!
