Natural landscape with a lot of history
Exciting fall days in the Hannover vacation region.
The diverse Hannover vacation region invites families to enjoy a variety of experiences this fall: Just a stone’s throw or a short S-Bahn ride away from the capital of Lower Saxony, the charming natural landscape is perfect for biking, hiking, or taking a stroll. Nestled in the heart of a lush nature reserve, for example, is the Steinhuder Meer, the largest lake in northwestern Germany. A well-developed hiking and biking trail runs around it, stretching 34 kilometers through moors and bird habitats, reed beds, and forests to a garden of glacial boulders and interesting observation towers. To cross the water, you can choose between passenger boats or rented boats for paddling, sailing, rowing, and pedal boating.

The Fascinating History of Gaming
For centuries, people living on the Steinhuder Meer made their living from fishing, and the craft of weaving also has a long tradition here. Today, the Fishermen’s and Weavers’ Museum in Steinhude tells this story: The house, built in 1850, features a hallway, parlor, kitchen, living and work room, bedroom, pantry, and a courtyard with stables, all furnished with original furniture. In addition to the history of fishing, visitors can view woven treasures spanning three centuries. In the adjacent Toy Museum, you can relive the history of play in all its forms—from Roman game pieces to tin soldiers, graceful porcelain-headed dolls, and mechanical tin toys, right up to gritty action figures. Beautiful View in the Deister
A Mine Tour in the Deister
"If you love mountains, you should explore the beautiful Deister mountain range in the southwest of Hanover," recommends Beate Fuchs, a travel expert at the consumer portal Ratgeberzentrale.de. At the summits, which rise to just over 400 meters, observation towers reward all hikers and cyclists with a magnificent view. But there are also fascinating insights to be found underground at the Klosterstollen visitor mine in Barsinghausen: On a guided tour, visitors can delve into the 300-year history of mining in the Deister and experience firsthand how coal was once extracted here. An exhibition featuring mining tools, traditional costumes, mining lamps, and historical artifacts sets the mood for the mine tour, which leads 1,380 meters into the mountain.
