A natural landscape steeped in history - Visit Hannover

Press release

Natural landscape with a lot of history

Exciting autumn days in the Hannover Holiday Region.

The diverse Holiday Region of Hannover offers families a variety of experiences this fall: Just a stone’s throw or a short S-Bahn ride from Lower Saxony’s capital, the charming natural landscape invites visitors to cycle, hike, or take a stroll. Nestled in the heart of a green nature reserve, for example, is Lake Steinhuder Meer, the largest lake in northwestern Germany. A well-developed hiking and biking trail runs around it, stretching 34 kilometers through moors and bird habitats, reed beds, and forests to a glacial boulder garden and interesting observation towers. You can cross the water either by passenger boat or in rented boats for paddling, sailing, rowing, and pedal boating.

The Fascinating History of Gaming

For centuries, people living on the Lake Steinhuder Meer made their living from fishing, and the craft of weaving also has a long tradition here. Today, the Fishermen’s and Weavers’ Museum in Steinhude tells this story: the 1850 house features a hallway, parlor, kitchen, living and workroom, bedroom, pantry, and a courtyard with stables, all furnished with original pieces. In addition to the history of fishing, visitors can view woven treasures spanning three centuries. In the adjacent Toy Museum, you can relive the history of play in all its forms—from Roman game pieces to tin soldiers, graceful porcelain head dolls, and mechanical tin toys, right up to fierce action figures. Beautiful views in the Deister

A tour of the Deister mine

"If you love mountains, you should explore the beautiful Deister range in the southwest of Hannover," recommends Beate Fuchs, a travel expert at the consumer portal Ratgeberzentrale.de. At the peaks, which rise to over 400 meters, observation towers reward hikers and cyclists with spectacular views. Exciting insights are also available underground at the Klosterstollen visitor mine in Barsinghausen: During a guided tour, visitors can immerse themselves in the 300-year history of mining in the Deister and experience firsthand how coal was once extracted here. An exhibition featuring mining tools, traditional costumes, lighting, and historical artifacts sets the mood for the mine tour, which leads 1,380 meters into the mountain.
