Sightseeing in Hanover

Hanover boasts highlights that make a visit to the city unforgettable: from A for the Old Town to Z for the Zoo. The Hannover Adventure Zoo, with its themed areas such as the Zambezi and the Jungle Palace, is one of northern Germany’s most important tourist attractions. Those interested in marine and river life will find plenty to enjoy at the SEA LIFE Aquarium.

With seven themed areas, over 2,000 animals representing some 200 species, daily animal shows, and approximately 1.2 million visitors per year, the Hannover Adventure Zoo is one of Europe’s most attractive zoos. Visitors glide by boat along the Zambezi River through the savanna, follow the Evolution Trail to Gorilla Hill, or marvel at baby elephants in the Jungle Palace. Aquarium enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy at Sea Life: Located in the Berggarten, Germany’s first tropical Sea Life offers insights into both local and tropical underwater worlds, showcasing habitats ranging from the Leine River to the Caribbean and the Amazon. Over 2,500 aquatic animals in more than 40 tanks and aquariums can be observed, ranging from clams and majestically gliding stingrays to piranhas. And those interested in orchids, ancient potted plants, or historic gardens will find a unique ensemble in the famous Herrenhausen Gardens, complete with the reconstructed palace.

There are countless historic landmarks and attractions to discover in downtown Hanover: the Old Town, the Marktkirche, the Old City Hall, the Old Town Flea Market with the “Nanas,” and Lake Maschsee. Many of them can be found practically at every turn thanks to the “Roter Faden”: This 4.2-kilometer circular route—a red line painted on the pavement—provides barrier-free access to the 36 most important sights. A tour by open-top bus or the hop-on, hop-off city tours to Hanover’s highlights are particularly charming. Sightseeing by bike or Segway is also popular.

In addition, Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH offers various group tours, such as the Bruchmeister Tour, a treasure hunt, neighborhood tours, and children’s tours. The adventure packages, which combine an overnight stay with exciting activities, are also in high demand. The range extends from classics, such as the Herrenhausen package or the “Get to Know Hannover” package, to wellness, shopping, and group- and family-oriented offers—such as a visit to the Erlebnis Zoo—all the way to event-related packages, such as those for the International Fireworks Competition.

In addition to the city’s popular sights, the Hanover vacation region also offers numerous attractions, such as the bison enclosure in Springe, where visitors of all ages can encounter wolves and bears. Marienburg Castle has a truly majestic appearance—a gift from King George V of Hanover to his beloved. Today, the castle is one of Germany’s most important Neo-Gothic architectural landmarks and enchants visitors of all ages with its fairy-tale appearance, numerous battlements and turrets, and impressive interior design.
