The KulturWerkStadt Building

The KulturWerkStadt building is the former synagogue, which was used as such until 1939.
In 1938, Burgdorf Fire Department Commander Adolf Michelssen prevented the synagogue from being burned down during Kristallnacht on November 9.
On February 17, 1939, the city of Burgdorf purchased the building and used it until 1959. After that, it was used as a commercial building.

Museum and Event Venue

In 2007, the house was purchased by a Burgdorf businessman, extensively restored, and leased to the city of Burgdorf on a long-term basis to serve as a museum.

Since 2008, it has been home to KulturWerkStadt, which complements and enhances the City Museum’s successful activities with its engaging exhibitions and cultural events.
KulturWerkStadt is managed and organized by the VVV Burgdorf.

The "Stumbling Stones"

Today, so-called “Stolpersteine” in front of the former synagogue and in front of several other buildings in Burgdorf, as well as a commemorative plaque on the front of the building, honor the Jewish citizens who fell victim to Nazi persecution.
The “Stolpersteine” are 10 x 10 cm brass plaques on which the victim’s name, date of birth, date of deportation, place of death, and date of death are engraved.
