Celebrations and festivals

Look forward to a spectacular fireworks choreography.

Throughout the year, Hanover’s major events attract hundreds of thousands of visitors from near and far.

Traditional and always new

Traditional folk festivals cause a sensation with numerous highlights. Music events, from one-off concerts to festivals lasting several days, attract fans in droves.

Great party calendar

Leisurely strolls in the shade of ancient trees, sparkling water, tempting culinary delights, and rousing concerts delight the senses—it’s the Maschseefest! A Mediterranean lifestyle, creative activities for the whole family, and the beautiful lakeshore just a short distance from downtown form the recipe for success of this event, which ranks among the largest folk festivals in Northern Germany. A long-standing tradition with ever-changing surprises is Hannover’s Marksmen’s Fair, which was first celebrated nearly 500 years ago. For ten days, everything revolves around thrilling rides and festive fun for young and old alike. The highlight is the Sunday Marksmen’s parade through the city center. Around 250,000 visitors turn out when, at the “Fête de la Musique,” over 1,500 musicians transform the city into one giant open-air stage. Jazz fans flock to “enercity swinging hannover,” which is celebrated on Ascension Day in front of the New City Hall. The “MASALA Welt-Beat Festival” and “A-cappella Week” offer musical discoveries. For rock and pop fans, the ZAG Arena, Expo Plaza, and the soccer stadium are the venues for the biggest concerts.

Highlights in the region

Fireworks over the water, accompanied by classical music and illuminated boats: The “Festive Weekend on Lake Steinhude” is celebrated on and around Lower Saxony’s largest lake—with live music, crafts, and plenty of attractions for young and old. A particularly thrilling experience is the lawn mower tractor race in Thönse, where daredevil drivers compete against each other on souped-up tractors. Among the region’s best-known cultural events are the international music festival “MuSe” in Seelze and “Mimuse” in Langenhagen, Northern Germany’s largest cabaret festival. Against unusual backdrops, the “Kultursommer” concert series presents international music stars and top-notch hidden gems—in monasteries and churches, in gardens, castles, and barns. New, surprising venues are added every year.
