Curtain Up: Hanover's Theaters and Concerts

International rankings place the State Opera and the Schauspiel Hannover among the very best. The theater scene impresses with its great diversity—ranging from drama to opera, ballet, musicals, variety shows, cabaret/comedy, and even puppet theater. An annual highlight is the Opera Ball. For decades, TANZtheater INTERNATIONAL has been presenting the latest developments in contemporary dance. Classical concerts in the newly designated UNESCO City of Music also attract national attention.

The theater world encompasses every facet, presenting new interpretations of time-honored classics as well as imaginatively staged world premieres. It offers a wide range of performing arts. Whether it’s a state theater, a touring production, or a private venue; whether it’s light entertainment or a sophisticated production—unforgettable cultural events are guaranteed in Hanover and the surrounding region. Outstanding ensembles, internationally renowned directors, and choreographers attract the highest level of attention on the global stage.

The famous GOP Variety Theater is home to acrobatics, magic, and comedy. The Long Night of Theaters offers a cross-section of Hannover’s theatrical arts. Theater lovers can put together a diverse program to enjoy until midnight. Another highlight is “Theaterformen,” one of Germany’s most important theater festivals.
The Opera Ball, celebrated each year under a special theme, offers a festive and lively atmosphere. Renowned conductors and orchestras provide thrilling classical music events in Hanover’s concert halls, such as in the Kuppelsaal of the HCC. Germany’s largest classical concert hall underwent extensive renovations from 2015 to 2016. The lighting and sound systems were also upgraded. The result is acoustics worthy of its guests—that’s how NDR described Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s concert with the London Symphony Orchestra at the opening of the newly renovated Kuppelsaal. The listed Große Sendesaal in the NDR Hannover broadcasting center can accommodate 140 musicians on stage and 1,200 audience members in the hall. As the home venue of the NDR Radiophilharmonie, it boasts exceptional acoustics. And at the International Joseph Joachim Violin Competition, talented musicians from around the world compete against one another.

The performances by TANZtheater INTERNATIONAL showcase the latest trends in the dance scene; the festival is one of the best-known of its kind in Germany.

Award-Winning
Since late 2014, the capital of Lower Saxony has held the title of UNESCO City of Music! The city thus joins the international UNESCO network of Creative Cities, which includes Glasgow, Seville, Bogotá, Bologna, Ghent, and Brazzaville. It was able to convince the UNESCO Commission in Paris primarily through its educational and training opportunities in the field of music, its strengths in the music and creative industries, its diverse range of offerings across all genres—from pop and rock to jazz, early music, classical, and contemporary music—and its strong choral scene.
