Hannover's wide variety of museums

Unique exhibits, valuable collections, spectacular exhibitions—Hannover is regarded throughout Germany as a major hub for art and museums.

Whether it’s the Sprengel Museum Hannover, the Historical Museum, the Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum, or the new Museum Schloss Herrenhausen, the collections and exhibitions offer fresh insights into a wide variety of fields, ranging from the visual arts, regional and local history, archaeology, natural history, and ethnology to the history of technology and everyday life.

Art is everywhere in Hanover, as seen in the Sculpture Mile, the Nanas, and the BUSSTOPs. The Sprengel Museum Hannover features art from the 20th and 21st centuries, and its retrospective exhibitions attract a great deal of interest. Other nationally renowned museums of contemporary art include the kestnergesellschaft and the Kunstverein Hannover. The Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum is also popular, covering an impressive range of topics including archaeology, the State Gallery, natural history/vivarium, ethnology, and the numismatic collection. The Museum August Kestner delights its visitors with art exhibits spanning from antiquity to the present day, as well as everyday objects and design.

The “Wilhelm Busch – German Museum of Caricature and Drawing” showcases satirical art, while the Historical Museum is particularly appealing to those interested in regional and local history. The new Museum Schloss Herrenhausen—an institution of the state capital of Hannover, funded by the state of Lower Saxony—is dedicated to the history of the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen and their historical figures.

The World of Kitchen – WoK, Europe’s first kitchen museum, showcases exhibits related to food preparation and nutrition. The Theater Museum takes visitors on a journey through 350 years of theater and opera history in Hannover. And the Museum of Energy History(ies) displays curiosities and classics that are sure to spark your interest. At the Hannover-Laatzen Aviation Museum, visitors can experience the history of aviation up close through more than 4,500 exhibits. The “Long Night of Museums” night event offers a chance to explore the diversity of Hannover’s exhibition venues in a single evening.

Sprengel Museum Hannover Expansion

With the expansion of the Sprengel Museum Hannover, one of the largest cultural projects in recent years is taking shape in Hannover. The new, elegant structure, made of anthracite-colored concrete, spans a total of 5,300 m², including 1,400 m² of exhibition space. The layout features ten spacious rooms of varying sizes with natural skylights, complemented by three tranquil oases—so-called “loggias”—offering views of Lake Maschsee. In addition, there is a large hall that offers a truly unique spatial experience with a spectacular staircase. In the new building, functional spaces such as workshops, storage areas, and specially climate-controlled storage facilities for photographic works complement the museum’s capabilities at the highest level. Even more works of art can now be made accessible to the public—an attractive asset for Hannover as a cultural hub!
