Lower Saxony’s largest lake, Lake Steinhuder Meer, is a popular destination for sailors, surfers, kite surfers, and swimmers. Tourists sail to Wilhelmstein Island on historic sailboats known as the “Auswanderer.” Along the 35-kilometer circular trail, observation towers offer fantastic panoramic views. Horse lovers will find their paradise in the Burgdorf region and in Wedemark—whether on their own horse, a rental horse, or in a horse-drawn carriage. Hikers are drawn to the 405-meter-high Deister with its lush greenery and many historical treasures. Just outside the state capital, local recreation areas such as the Koldinger Lakes, Wietzepark in Isernhagen and Langenhagen, and Lake Altwarmbüchener See delight the senses.

Like a distant fairytale castle, Marienburg Castle sits majestically atop a hill near the town of Pattensen. The last summer residence of the Guelph kings of Hannover commands a view that stretches far across the Calenberger Land. This magnificent Neo-Gothic castle was built in the mid-19th century by King George V as a gift to his wife, Marie. Guided tours offer fascinating glimpses behind the scenes. During the summer months, the program features live music and theater. The carriage house and former stables provide a unique setting for dining.

Exploring the region by bike

Working closely with its 21 municipalities, the Region Hannover has developed a 1,000-kilometer network of bike paths: the Bicycle Region. A total of 15 signposted routes start at Lake Maschsee in the center of Hannover, radiating out across the region and on into the neighboring counties. The 160-kilometer “Green Ring” offers a varied circular bike tour. And the 100-kilometer Deisterkreisel route sometimes takes you high up into the hills.
