Oh, it's so British: in 2014, the Union Jack will fly over Hanover

Please note: In 2014, things will be “Oh, that’s so British” in the capital of the state of Lower Saxony, where Hanover is the focal point of the exhibition titled “The Hanoverians on Britain’s Throne 1714–1834.”

Visitors will be able to relive an era when royalty came to Hannover through four major exhibitions, as well as various cultural events and concerts, a fireworks display, a specially commissioned opera, and a British garden party.

Real connections through personal bonds; the 2014 state exhibition

From 1714 to 1834, the people of Hanover also served as rulers of the British Empire. The 300th anniversary of this personal union has inspired a major exhibition at both the federal and state levels. From May 17 to October 5, several exhibitions in Hanover and the medieval royal city of Celle will take visitors on a fascinating journey of discovery through the history of these German and British ties.

You should also visit Marienburg Castle. From May 1 to November 9, the exhibition “The Path to the Crown” will be on display, which also explores the theme of this very special anniversary. For the first time since the end of the Kingdom of Hanover, the Royal Crown of Hanover will be on display. To this day, the castle remains in the family ownership of the Guelphs, and its owner, Ernst August, Crown Prince of Hanover, says to many of the British visitors: “2014 is a special year for the House of Hanover, and I am eager to highlight the exhibitions and the highly varied supporting program.”

Ondeo de la Union Jack: British Year in Hanover

Several large-scale events held at regular intervals will also offer a truly royal program to commemorate the era when the royal family hailed from Hanover: at the International Fireworks Competition on May 31, the British team will captivate audiences with a fireworks display set against the splendid Baroque backdrop of the Herrenhausen Gardens; a supporting program of cabaret and music will provide family-friendly entertainment for British visitors. The atmosphere will be “very British” at the Fête de la Musique in downtown Hanover on June 21—in addition to the KunstFestSpiele art festival in the Herrenhausen Gardens, a unique event in Europe whose program transcends genres and spans both the Baroque and modern eras.

To celebrate the “royal jubilee,” various events will be held throughout the year in theaters and parks, at the racetrack, in museums, and in churches, adding a touch of royal glamour to Hanover. For example, the opera “George” was written and composed specifically for the state celebration, and Benjamin Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at the Hanover State Theater will fly the flag for all things British. The Herrenhausen Garden Festival will also celebrate the British way of life with “Urban Gardening – London Special” in the British-style “George Garden”; there will also be a day of races between Hanover and Great Britain at the “Neue Bult” racetrack in Langenhagen.

The British Year of Hanover is currently being promoted in London by Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH (HMTG) in cooperation with the airline Germanwings.

HMTG has compiled a variety of group offers and tour packages, including overnight accommodations, that are suitable for anyone planning to visit the city for the state exhibition and the events commemorating the Year of Britain in Hanover.
