Hanover has broken the Expo record: tourism in Hanover achieved its best-ever result in 2011. Between January and December, 2.106 million visitors stayed overnight in the city, surpassing Hanover’s previous record set during the 2000 Expo (2.030 million overnight stays) for the first time. In 2011, the Lower Saxony Department of Statistics and Communications Technology reported a year-over-year increase of 179,669 overnight stays, equivalent to a 9.3% rise. Neither Hamburg, Munich, nor Berlin has achieved such a high growth rate. The long-term trend is also very impressive: compared to 1999, when just over 1.1 million visitors stayed overnight in Hanover, the figure has nearly doubled over the past 12 years.
"This record-breaking figure shows that Hannover has become an increasingly attractive destination for visitors in recent years. There are numerous first-class events in the city: the Maschsee Lake Festival, the Fireworks Competition, Made in Germany Zwei, and the TUI Marathon, just to name a few. The world that revolves around Hanover is well worth a visit, and we are determined to continue this positive trend," announced Mayor Stephan Weil.
"These figures represent a huge success," explained Hans Christian Nolte, managing director of Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH (HMTG). The record figures are attributed to a hugely successful year for trade fairs and exhibitions, as well as a positive trend in the private tourism sector.
