Welcome to Hanover!
Located in the heart of Europe, home to major industrial trade shows, with excellent transportation links, a wide variety of recreational activities, and affordable yet high-quality residential properties—all combined with a unique proximity to nature—these are just a few of the many good reasons to visit the capital of Lower Saxony. Direct flights from Hannover Airport and the ICE rail network provide direct connections to many destinations in the United Kingdom.
Baroque garden art and sightseeing highlights
The Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen, together with the recently rebuilt Herrenhausen Palace, are Hannover’s most famous attraction and one of the most important Baroque gardens in Europe. The 17th-century garden features a dazzling array of romantic fountains, exotic plants, and striking sculptures. And there are plenty of other attractions that make Hannover worth the trip: take the sloping parabolic elevator up to the dome of the New City Hall, where you’ll enjoy a splendid view of the entire city, or visit the historic Old Town with its half-timbered houses. In addition, fun-filled events such as the world’s largest marksmen’s fair and the Christmas markets draw numerous visitors to Hannover.
The Green City
City forests, parks, and recreational areas make Hannover one of the greenest cities in Germany, where you can experience nature while enjoying the benefits of urban living. The Eilenriede is an inviting, lush green oasis: covering 642 hectares, the city’s “green lung” is nearly twice as large as New York’s Central Park. Lake Maschsee, too, offers unspoiled natural habitats and recreational activities just a stone’s throw from the city and serves as the setting for a major summer event—the Lake Maschsee Festival.
Ahoy 2016 Maschsee Lake Festival: Come on board for a voyage around the world!
A vacation vibe in the city, a seaside atmosphere in the heart of town. From July 27 to August 14, the vacation season takes center stage on an international scale along the shores of Hannover’s very own lake at the 31st Maschsee Lake Festival. For 19 days, visitors to northern Germany’s largest public open-air party can sail around the world on a culinary and artistic journey. The main attractions include delicious specialties from international caterers, free open-air concerts, exciting activities on the lake, a variety of cabaret acts, and a fun-filled program for kids. From the 81-meter-high mobile “Maschsee Skyline” observation tower—the tallest in Europe—you’ll enjoy a spectacular view of the lake and Hannover’s famous landmarks—we guarantee a whole new perspective!
This year, too, the Maschsee Lake Festival is ready to embark on a culinary journey around the world. Under the motto: “Ahoy 2016 Maschsee Lake Festival: Come on board for a voyage around the world!” the ports of call include the cuisines of the Far East, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Germany, and the Caribbean. The chefs are looking forward to welcoming guests aboard the Maschsee Lake Festival with traditional national dishes, exotic drinks, and delicious cocktails. But the focus isn’t just on food—it’s also a musical journey around the world.
Culture, Arts, and Leisure
Did you know? Since 2014, Hannover has held the title of UNESCO City of Music and is part of the international UNESCO network. The opera and drama departments of the Hannover State Theater are leading lights in the German theater scene. Unique exhibits and spectacular exhibitions have earned Hannover a reputation as a city of art and museums. The famous Herrenhausen Gardens also provide a superb setting for prestigious open-air cultural events. The Baroque gardens provide a perfect venue for the KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen arts festival, as well as for the International Fireworks Competition and open-air theater performances.
