Excellence in Research and Teaching

Hanover’s higher education landscape offers a nearly comprehensive range of degree programs and is known for its excellent academic quality. This is reflected in its four universities, one university of applied sciences, and several renowned private academies. Thanks to the practical and forward-looking focus of their degree programs, many Hanover graduates also launch their professional careers here. In total, the state capital is home to approximately 37,000 students; over 6,000 of them are from abroad. With approximately 22,000 students and around 160 degree programs and specializations across ten faculties, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University Hannover is Lower Saxony’s largest university. A new milestone is its merger with the Universities of Clausthal and Braunschweig to form the Lower Saxony University of Applied Sciences (NTH). Over 7,000 students are enrolled in the five faculties of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hannover (HsH). As Lower Saxony’s only conservatory, the University of Music, Drama, and Media Hannover (HMTMH) holds a special position.

From Hanover to the World

Hannover’s research centers are among the leaders in the fields of production technology and laser technology. At the Hannover Production Technology Center (PZH) in Garbsen, the motto “Science and industry under one roof” is put into practice. More than 800 scientists and technicians collaborate here with partners from industry. The Laser Zentrum Hannover is a key driver for attracting companies in the areas of research and development as well as industry-oriented training. The privately run GISMA (German International Graduate School of Management) offers executives working in an international environment management training that meets the highest standards.

A Leader in Medicine

The Hannover Medical School (MHH) enjoys a worldwide reputation for its pioneering work in transplant medicine. With over 2,800 students, it is the largest medical training institution in Germany. The MHH maintains close ties—particularly in the field of biotechnology—with the companies located in the neighboring Medical Park. This area is also home to the impressive building housing the INI (International Neuroscience Institute) specialty clinic. The University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (TiHo) is another international leader in its field; it has over 2,400 students enrolled and traces its history back to 1778.
