The spotlight is on respiratory research at the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (ITEM).

Early detection of air pollutants to enable assessments of their risks to people, diagnosing respiratory illnesses and developing new medications – these are important objectives for the approximately 300 ITEM employees.

Contract research for healthcare

Fraunhofer ITEM has been conducting research for public authorities and industry clients for more than 35 years. Its research activities include studies for consumer protection and workplace and environmental toxicology, preclinical and clinical pharmaceutical research and development, and the production of biopharmaceuticals for clinical research. It also conducts early clinical trials for the approval of drugs to treat allergies, asthma and COPD. Special rooms are available for this purpose, such as pollen rooms where the effects of medications on hay fever are analysed.

New research centre: CRC Hannover

Fraunhofer ITEM founded the Clinical Research Center Hannover (CRC Hannover) in cooperation with Hannover Medical School and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig. CRC Hannover provides the ideal infrastructure for early clinical trials (phases I and II). Scientists and doctors can perform the most important step in medical translational research here: testing the efficacy and tolerability of new medicines in humans.
