Renowned financial service providers such as Swiss Life and Nord/LB have a presence in the city on the Leine River, with headquarters and subsidiaries—as does Deutsche Hypothekenbank. Additionally, there is Bankhaus Hallbaum, a branch of Bankhaus M.M. Warburg & CO. The distinctive architecture of Nord/LB’s headquarters makes quite an impression on Hannover’s cityscape. The most important financial institutions in the region are the savings banks and credit unions. Sparkasse Hannover is one of the largest financial institutions governed by public law in Germany. Other financial institutions include Sparda Bank and Hannoversche Volksbank.

Hanover is also home to Lower Saxony’s stock exchange and a subsidiary of the German Central Bank. Overall, the key financial services sector accounts for a significant share of employment in the Hanover region (5.2%), with approximately 25,000 people employed by 830 companies.
