What is geocaching?

Geocaching is a scavenger hunt in which the tools of the game have been adapted to the modern age. In the past, children used to search for treasure chests; today, adults are out and about with their cell phones. Just like in a traditional scavenger hunt, one or more items are hidden, which the participants—also known as geocachers—must find. The object is often hidden inside a container. A logbook is usually included, where the successful finder can sign their name. Together, these items form what is known as a geocache. 

The geographic coordinates of these treasures—known as caches or geocaches—are published online. The player who hid the cache enters the clues about it into a database. This allows other players to set out in search of the caches using a GPS device or smartphone. 

The hiding spots can really be anywhere—in the city, by a lake, on a mountain. There are no limits to your creativity. 

In addition, the treasure chests often contain small items that treasure hunters can take home as souvenirs. The catch: you must leave a new item of equal value in the chest so that the next person to find it doesn’t go home empty-handed!
