Hanover State Opera - The Lover

The Hanover State Opera is among the world's best—offering music, ballet, and opera of the highest caliber.

The Hanover Opera House was built between 1845 and 1852 based on a design by Friedrich Laves. This late-Classical building is one of the most beautiful in Hanover and ranks among the city’s most significant landmarks.

Schedule and ensemble

Laura Berman took over as artistic director of the Hanover State Opera at the start of the 2019/20 season. In her role, she seeks to foster open dialogue with the local community and to engage with the European opera scene. The program and ensemble of the Hanover State Opera are characterized by diversity and internationalism. In addition to contemporary productions of classical works, the program features world premieres, musical explorations, and formats tailored for young audiences. In 2020, the Hanover State Opera won the international “Oper! Award” for “Best Opera House of the Year.”

Hanover State Ballet & State Orchestra

The Hanover State Ballet is led by Artistic Director Marco Goecke. With his distinctive style, he creates art for the 21st century, continually refines his work, and invites renowned choreographers to Hanover.

The Lower Saxony State Orchestra of Hanover is an opera and concert orchestra with a history of success spanning nearly 400 years. Under the baton of General Music Director Stephan Zilias, the State Orchestra performs in opera and ballet productions, symphony and special concerts, as well as chamber and children’s concerts.

International Opera Studio

At the start of the 2021–22 season, the Hanover State Opera established an International Opera Studio. Here, young singers receive practical training to prepare them for a career on stage, bridging the gap between music college and an opera career.

Formerly

Today's State Opera House initially served as the royal court theater after the palace theater had become too small for the king. After war damage, the building was renovated from 1948 and rebuilt in the historical style.
