Hanover State Opera

The Hanover Opera House was built between 1845 and 1852 based on a design by Friedrich Laves. This late-Classical building is one of the most beautiful in Hanover and ranks among the city’s most significant landmarks.

A New Direction at the Hanover State Opera

With Bodo Busse as its new artistic director, the Hanover State Opera is becoming a space for resonance—open to voices, perspectives, and encounters. As a cultural center with international appeal, the State Opera not only presents performances on its own stages but also extends its reach into the city and forges connections far beyond Hanover’s city limits—for example, through a collaboration with the Opéra National de Lyon and a guest performance by the State Ballet in Madrid.

Hanover State Ballet & State Orchestra

At the same time, the multi-award-winning choreographer Goyo Montero is taking over as director of the Hannover State Ballet—an outstanding artistic figure who is giving dance in Hannover a contemporary, internationally connected profile: energetic, visionary, and groundbreaking.

The Lower Saxony State Orchestra of Hanover, under the new leadership of General Music Director Francesco Angelico, accompanies all of this as both an opera orchestra and a concert orchestra with a history of success spanning nearly four hundred years: In addition to opera and ballet performances, symphony concerts, and special concerts, the orchestra can also be experienced at unique venues outside the State Opera, at chamber concerts, and at concerts for children and young people.

Support for Emerging Artists

Supporting young talent is also a key focus: With the newly founded Music Theater Academy, in cooperation with the “Hannover University of Music, Drama, and Media,” a robust training program for emerging artists is being launched.

Today's State Opera House initially served as the royal court theater after the palace theater had become too small for the king. After war damage, the building was renovated from 1948 and rebuilt in the historical style.
