100 Years of the Leibniz University Society of Hanover, Inc.

The Leibniz University Society of Hanover, Inc. was founded 100 years ago, in 1921, as the “Hannoversche University Community/Association of Friends of the Hanover University of Technology, Inc.”

The founding members’ goal was to promote research projects at the Technical University and to provide support where public funding was insufficient. This included the academic teaching and research activities of faculty and students, teaching materials, as well as the establishment and expansion of institutes and their facilities.

Significance for the University

Even today, the University Society for Leibniz University Hannover plays a vital role in areas where there are projects worthy of support but that cannot be funded by other external sources. This is where the University Society’s work comes into play. The fact that the President of Leibniz University is a statutory member of the Board of Directors demonstrates, on the one hand, how important the University Society’s support is to the university, and on the other hand, that the university’s interests are prominently represented in the Society’s highest decision-making body. Through the awarding of academic prizes, the University Society also honors outstanding dissertations completed at Leibniz University.

To mark its 100th anniversary, the University Society plans to establish a university foundation.

Anniversary and Presentation of the Karmarsch Commemorative Medal

Due to the COVID-19 situation, the anniversary celebration—which was to include the presentation of the Karmarsch Commemorative Medal—did not take place as planned on December 2. The celebration was rescheduled for early summer 2022, during which the commemorative publication authored by Prof. Dr. Carl-Hans Hauptmeyer, Dr. Rita Seidel, and Dr. Rainer Ertel was also presented; it offers an interesting and comprehensive look at the history of the University Society within the context of the history of the University and the city of Hanover.
