HPI - Heinz Piest Institute for Craft Technology

Heinz Piest Institute for Craft Technology

The Heinz Piest Institute (HPI) for Craft Technology at Leibniz University Hannover is one of five research and service institutions affiliated with the German Institute for Craft (DHI).

The HPI was founded in 1950 as the “Handwerkstechnisches Institut” (Institute for Crafts and Technology) and is responsible for technical matters and training in the skilled trades. While the institute initially focused primarily on issues specific to individual businesses, today the HPI concentrates mainly on cross-business issues related to the development of the skilled trades through the promotion of innovation and technology transfer.

The institute's main areas of focus are currently divided into:

  • Applied Research: In addition to our own research projects, we also conduct research for government agencies and research institutions.
  • Innovation and technology transfer: This primarily involves promoting business and innovation. Current technological developments are monitored, and their relevance to the skilled trades is assessed.
  • Applying Knowledge in Vocational Training: While the previous section focuses on testing new technologies for the skilled trades, this section focuses on implementing relevant innovations in vocational training. In addition, this division of the HPI assists with the planning of training centers.
  • Management, Quality, and Standardization: This division of the HPI focuses on internationalization, quality and knowledge management, and analyses of the sustainability of educational institutions.
