Adventure Tour 3 - Former Quarries
Hike to the former coal mining sites in the Deister
From the parking lot at the visitor mine, you’ll reach a footpath that winds around the slag heap. A trail branches off to the left and leads up the slag heap. From here, you’ll have a sweeping view of the Calenberger Land. Where the path forks, this hike takes you to the right, following the former slag heap all the way to the tennis court. Turning right, you reach the road, where you keep to the left. After about 200 m, turn right back into the forest. Now continue straight through a mixed forest until you reach a crossroads. Here, the hike continues to the left, toward Kirchdorf-Egestorf. At the next crossroads, there are two possible routes:
Option 1:
After crossing the Spalterhalsbach stream, continue straight ahead and turn left up the hill toward the former Voß Villa in the quarry. Here you can clearly see the layering of the sandstone. At the villa, turn around, head down the hill, cross the stream, and then take a sharp left onto a forest path that climbs steeply uphill until you reach the road.
After a left turn, walk 300 m slightly uphill until a path branches off to the right. You are now in the area of the old quarries.
Option 2:
Turn right at the intersection toward Kamm; the path climbs slightly until you reach the spot where the trail branches off toward the old quarries.
Whether you choose Option 1 or Option 2, from the entrance to the old quarries, follow a well-maintained hiking trail that descends gently to the Deister Open-Air Theater. But wait! After 50 meters, it’s best to turn left toward Kummerberg to get a view of the former quarries.
From the Deister Open-Air Theater, the route continues along Ludwig-Jahn-Straße and Hinterkampstraße, back to the starting point.
