The 90-hectare Wisentgehege Springe now provides a species-appropriate home for 100 species of wildlife, helping to preserve a fascinating diversity of life: from the wild bison and Przewalski’s wild horses to the magnificent brown bears and elegant otters, right through to the mysterious wolves. Unforgettable moments and many animal species await visitors along a 6-kilometer circular hiking trail.
The bison enclosure spans over 90 hectares and is home to approximately 100 European animal species, which are bred and displayed for visitors. These include species such as Przewalski's horses, moose, beavers, lynx, brown bears, and wolves, as well as many ducks, geese, and birds of prey.
The core of the concept—and the key difference from other zoological facilities—is the presentation of animal species in their natural habitats. In addition to the species kept in captivity, this also includes animals that live freely on our grounds. These include various species of woodpeckers, kingfishers, various bats, wild-breeding eagle owls, gray herons, many insects, and other small animals. The natural landscape of the bison enclosure, featuring ancient oak forests, alder swamps, ponds, meadows, and streams, represents a high conservation value.
The content is presented through: detailed signage about the animal species on display, some multimedia displays, signage explaining the forest ecosystem and its animal and plant species, and information on conservation breeding programs for endangered species. Guided tours led by full-time and volunteer staff. A guided flight demonstration at the falconry center featuring native birds of prey, with information on the ecology of the birds on display.
