The monastery
To create a bright, otherworldly space—that was the goal of the master builders who, in the 13th century, constructed this early Gothic brick church as a simple, upward-reaching house of worship for a foundation established by Count Bernhard II of Wölpe.
Celebrating Mass and prayer services together, preserving monastic cultural traditions such as calligraphy, embroidery, and gardening, sharing our history through guided tours of our monastery and museum, and organizing exhibitions, retreats, and seminars are the ways in which we fulfill our mission today.
At the Convent Museum, we invite you to take a journey through the history and present-day life of Protestant convents in northern Germany. The Convent Museum illustrates monastic life in Lower Saxony’s convents across various eras: during the Middle Ages, at the time of the Reformation, and in the 19th century.
